The Abies nordmanniana ( Nordmann Fir ) is an evergreen tree that grows to great heights in a pyramid like shape. The truly grand Nordmann Fir is cultivated in its native habitat and in Europe, for its use as a Christmas tree. It is not as heavily cultivated as some other species like the Fraser and Balsam Fir though.

It is also a popular choice for bonsai growers as well and is native to the mountainous regions of Caucasus and Turkey.

Abies nordmanniana is a cold climate species and will not grow in warm or tropical regions. In its native zones, it has been recorded as growing at altitudes above 2000 metres!

Other common names for the Abies nordmanniana are the Christmas Tree Fir, the Non-Drop Tree and the Caucasian Fir.

This species can apparently grow up to 85 metres tall with a trunk diameter of 2 metres, although the tallest tree officially on record is located in Russia and is only 60.5 metres tall. The largest trunk diameter was recorded in New Zealand at a massive 181 cm.

The needles are 2-3 cm’s long and dark green in colour on top, with a white colour underneath.

FACTS ABOUT ABIES NORDMANNIANA

The Nordmann Fir is a popular Christmas tree in many parts of Europe due to its beautiful foliage, natural cone shape and long lasting needles. The same characteristics have made it a popular choice for bonsai growers.

Denmark alone grows approximately 9 million Nordmann Firs every year. However, in its native habitat the species is classified as endangered but has been heavily planted in some regions for deforestation purposes.

The timber is heavily used in the construction industry as also for paper pulp production.

HOW TO GROW ABIES NORDMANNIANA (Nordmann Fir)

Step 1

Soak seeds for 24 hours in water. Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with a small amount of moist (not wet) sandy-like soil. Write the date and place bag into the fridge for 6-8 weeks.

Check weekly to make sure the soil is not drying out and re-moisten if necessary. Also check for any seeds that may have begun to sprout, this is not common but can happen occasionally. Sow any sprouts immediately as per step 2.

Step 2

Once cold stratification is completed sow each seed approximately 3 mm deep into a well-draining soil mix and moisten. Keep soil moist during the entire germination period.

Place into a light but shaded area for germination. Ideal temperatures for germination are 16-18°C/60-65°F.

Average germination begins around 3-6 weeks.

Step 3

Keep seedlings in pots for at least the first two growing seasons so they are protected from heavy frost and winds while still fragile.

Frost or harsh hot sun can easily kill the young plants so moving them to suit your local conditions will be necessary. Mulch the base for hot summers to give them the best opportunity to survive.

Step 4

Transplant to final position once the tree is 30-90 cm’s tall during the plants dormant season. The Nordmann Fir will cope with transplanting better at these stages. As they grow more mature, transplanting can be a bit harder on them. Once established, will survive severe cold and not require much watering.

Nordmann Firs can take between 20-40 years to reach maturity, however; can be ready for harvesting as a Christmas tree as young as 8-10 years old.
