White Agapanthus is a popular plant for it’s hardiness, ease of care and beauty as a border or potted feature. With strappy foliage and tall stems with clusters of lily-like flowers, they really are a spectacular sight when in full bloom.

Suitable for cool to tropical climates as they are frost, heat and drought tolerant, they will also grow in coastal locations.

Agapanthus ( Agapanthus orientalis syn. praecox ) is an evergreen perennial that has strappy foliage and tall stems that display clusters of their gorgeous lily-like flowers. It is often used as a border plant and for good reason, this drought, frost and heat tolerant plant puts on quite a show as a border plant and can add a bit of a tropical feel. This species also grows happily in pots and makes a great cut flower.

Other common names for the Agapanthus orientalis are Lily of the Nile, African Lily, or Common Agapanthus. The Agapanthus name is Greek and means ‘Love Flower’.

Growth

The foliage of the Agapanthus is strap-like and grows to around 50-60 cm’s in length. During flowering season, tall stems emerge from the centre of the plant, that bear clusters of white flowers. These stems can stand up to a metre tall and once in bloom, really are stunning. Often grown alongside the Blue Agapanthus which shares the same botanical name.

This species can flower from Spring all the way through to early winter in the right spot. Once frosts begin in cooler regions, this will kill off the flower buds and flowering will be over until the following season. However, in warmer climates Agapanthus has been known to flower continuously all year.

HOW TO GROW AGAPANTHUS ORIENTALIS (White Agapanthus)

Step 1

Fill small starter pots or seeding tray with a mixture of part soil and part sand.

Place two seeds per pot directly onto the surface or scatter if in a tray. Cover lightly with approximately 1 mm of further soil & moisten with a light mist spray bottle or hose to avoid disturbing the seeds.

Step 2

Place pots outdoors in a mostly shaded but well-lit area. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap to maintain warmth. Keep the soil moist – but never wet and boggy during the entire germination process.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 22-26°C/70-80°F

Germination averages at around 3-6 weeks.

Step 3

Seedlings can be transplanted when they reach 5 cm in height.

Step 4

Grow the Agapanthus seedlings in a warm, bright area until autumn. Introduce to full sun gradually over a week or two.

Transplant them into a permanent bed in Spring. Be sure that the soil is well draining and that they are in a full sun location. Agapanthus will tolerate some shade if necessary but will flower better in full sun. This species is drought tolerant and will cope with frost.
