Ageratum are popular as a border or potted plant. They prefer a full sun location and can be grown from temperate to tropical regions. As an annual they are quick growing and their long lasting flower does so profusely through the summer. This listing is for the BLUE coloured flowers.

This species is low maintenance and easy to grow however it can be invasive. Please note; Ageratum are toxic to livestock.

The Floss Flower ( Ageratum houstonianum ) is an annual flowering plant who’s summer blooming flowers are attractive to many gardeners. The flowers are button shaped and have soft frills that stand on end around them. Easy to grow and extensively used as a border or potted plant, it can also be a good cut flower. Attracts butterflies to the garden but is toxic to livestock.

The species is native to North America and Mexico, where it received its original botanical name and synonym ‘Ageratum mexicanum’. Other common names for the Ageratum houstonianum are Pussy Foot, Mexican Paintbrush and Blueweed.

Growth

Floss Flower is a quick growing annual that blooms continuously from late spring until cooler weather begins, when it is killed off by frosts. In warmer tropical areas it can grow as a perennial. The plant grows to around 60 cm’s tall and 50 cm’s wide. Leaves are green and grow to approximately 4-7 cm’s, flower heads are an inch in diameter and surprisingly long lasting. Prefers a full sun position unless in very hot climates where some afternoon shade can be suitable. Remove plant after it has died off.

Ageratum is toxic to grazing animals and can cause liver problems, so please do not plant these anywhere near grazing fields!

Ageratum is prone to becoming a weed and is classed as invasive in Australia, NZ, the United States & Europe, among other countries. This can be prevented by removing the flowers before they dry out and release seed which can be spread by birds and pets. Remove plants once they have died off.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW AGERATUM HOUSTONIANUM (Floss Flower – Blue Ball)

 

Step 1

Sow directly into ground or into pots. Start indoors in pots mid-winter to best extend flowering period and transplant outdoors once last frosts have passed.

Surface sow seeds onto a well-draining soil mix and gently press into the soil to ensure contact.  Ageratum seeds require some light to promote germination, so do not need to be covered. Water gently with a spray bottle or fine mist hose to avoid disturbing seeds.

Step 2

Place pots in a warm, sunny to part shaded location and keep moist during entire germination process.

Ideal temperature for germination process is 15-22°C/60-75°F

Seeds should germinate within 3-4 weeks.

Step 3

Transplant seeds into garden or larger pots if necessary once they are large enough to gently handle, spacing should be 30 cm’s apart. Choose a full sun location for them, if in very hot climates, this species may need some afternoon shade.

This plant is an annual in cooler climates and perennial in warmer climates. Ageratum is reasonably easy to grow and hardy in the right location.

Dead head flowers just before they die off to encourage more blooms. and the spreading of seeds. Remove plants from the garden as they die off.

Suitable for container growing.
