Growth

Aloe striata is a evergreen stemless succulent plant that grows to approximately 45 cm’s tall. This species will form clumps around the base of the mother plant that can be separated away to make their own individual plants. The leaf edges of the Coral Aloe make it really stand out in the garden, because of its pink colour. The flower colour is coral orange in full sun but in more shady conditions, they can be more of a red.

FACTS ABOUT ALOE STRIATA (Coral Aloe)

Coral Aloe is often confused with another species, Aloe reynoldsii, but there are two obvious differences. Firstly, the Aloe striata has smooth edges on its leaves whereas the Aloe reynoldsii has serrated tooth edges. Secondly, the flower is an orange red colour as compared to the Aloe reynoldsii which has yellow flowers.

The flowers of Aloe striata attract nectar loving birds, bees, and butterflies to the garden.

Coral Aloe is one of the only species of Aloe to have smooth edges on the leaves. Its common name is derived from the colour of its leaves which resemble the ocean’s water.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW ALOE STRIATA (Coral Aloe)

Step 1

Sow the seeds 2 mm deep into pots or seeding tray of a well-draining 50/50 sand and soil mix or a succulent soil.

Moisten the soil mix and leave in a well-lit position out of direct sunlight.

Step 2

Keep soil moist throughout entire germination period but never wet.

Ideal temperatures for germination are around 22-26°C/72-79°F

Seeds begin germinating around 3-4 weeks in ideal conditions.

Step 3

Water only once the soil has started to dry out once seedlings have emerged. Transplant seedlings gently if necessary once they are strong enough to handle, or you can wait until they become root bound.

Aloe can be grown permanently in pots.

Step 4

Final position should be in full sun. Part sun is tolerated, especially if in hot, dry climates.

Once established, will survive some cold and will not require much watering. However additional water may be needed when flowering.

Aloe plants will cross breed with other Aloes nearby if flowering at the same time – so seed is not always reliable to grow true to variety if this is the case.
