Due to their low-maintenance and ability to tolerate wet soils, the Alexander Palm is a popular choice in tropical regions. Although native to Australia, Archontophoenix alexandrae has been naturalised in Hawaii, California, and Florida where they are sold commercially.

Other common names include the King Palm, King Alexander Palm, Alexandra Palm, and the Northern Bangalow Palm.

Growth

The Alexander Palm grows to heights of between 8 and 10 metres although some specimens have reached 18 metres in the native habitat. Archontophoenix alexandrae is one of the fastest growing palm varieties and add 30-100cm annually where conditions suit. They are usually started in small pots so that seedlings can be moved indoors during colder periods. Mature trees can withstand temperatures around -2°C / 28°F.

In spring and summer, small white flowers are grown in clusters that eventually turn into red berries. The berries are eaten and spread by a range of birds which has led to this palm becoming invasive in some areas. Can be grown in poor quality soils and is tolerate of shady locations. And despite their love for the tropics, they grow well in temperate climates as far south as Melbourne.

HOW TO GROW ARCHONTOPHOENIX ALEXANDRAE (Alexander Palm)

Step 1

Start by soaking seeds in water for 24 hours prior to sowing as this may improve germination response. However, is not compulsory.

Sow the seeds into small pots of a pre-moistened seed raising mix. Keep soil moist at all times during germination, to avoid over watering and to be gentle as seedlings are tiny and fragile, use a spray bottle.

Leave in a bright position out of direct sunlight.

Step 2

Needs warm temperatures of at least 20°C/70°F so if it’s winter, keep indoors in a mini greenhouse. Ideal germination temperature is 25°C/80°F. If your temperatures are much cooler than this; you may need a heat mat to achieve germination or wait until spring or summer.

Seeds should germinate after 3-6 weeks but can take as long as 12 weeks depending on conditions.

Step 3

Once sprouted, move tray/pot to sunny position. Young seedlings do better in shady areas, especially during hot summer periods.

Leave seedlings in pot until plant becomes root bound before promoting to a larger pot. In areas south of Sydney or inland, keep in pots/containers until after the second winter.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after the second winter has passed.

Once established, will survive quite cold temperatures to 0°C but will enjoy regular watering until reaching maturity.

Alexander Palms can take between 3-5 years to mature.
