Growth

Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial flowering herb plant that only grows to a height of around 45cm (18 inches) by a width of 20cm (8 inches). Mongolian Milk Vetch has a clumping habit and requires a combination of plenty of sunlight and deep soil with good drainage to allow their roots to develop.

Plants do not transplant well at any age and should be sown directly into their final position. This can pose challenges in Australia as the harsh sun can easily kill young seedlings. One solution is to provide adequate shade for the young plants throughout their first growing season and then allow full exposure at the beginning of the plants’ second Spring.

During the Winter, plants go dormant to protect themselves and can tolerate sub-zero temperatures and heavy frosts.

HOW TO GROW ASTRAGALUS MEMBRANACEUS (Mongolian Milk Vetch)

Step 1

Start by placing the seeds in a small zip-lock bag of moist soil, not soggy. Ensure all the seeds have good contact with the soil.

Write the date on the bag and place into the fridge for three weeks. Check the soil each week and lightly mist if soil has become dry.

Step 2

After three weeks, remove the seeds from the bag and soak them in water for one hour.

Outside temperatures for sowing should be at least 10°C/50°F and after the last frost.

Sow the soaked seeds directly into their final position of part-shade/full sun roughly 5mm deep and allow 30cm (12 inches) spacing. Soil should have good drainage and provide the roots roughly 50cm (2 feet) in depth.

Moisten thoroughly and keep moist throughout the germination period which can take 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Mongolian Milk Vetch does not tolerate transplanting which can complicate the growth of seedlings if sown in a position where the sunlight is too hot. It may be worth shading the seedlings early on from harsh afternoon sun until they have properly established.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F and will go dormant over cold winters.

Mongolian Milk Vetch is primarily harvested for their roots which can take around 2-3 years to reach maturity.
