Growth

This species is a perennial in cold to temperate climates but can be grown as an annual in tropical climates. Aubrieta is a low growing plant that only reaches heights of around 5-10 cm’s and will cover an area of around ½ a metre.
The leaves are green all year round and its gorgeous tiny purple flowers create a blanket of purple from very early in spring. The plant prefers a full sun location but is happy in part shade, especially afternoon shade in areas with extreme summer heat. Quite drought tolerant once established.

Prune back in autumn – winter to encourage next seasons growth and keep the plant neat and tidy.

HOW TO GROW AUBRIETA CULTORUM (Aubrieta)

Step 1

Surface sow seeds either into pots or trays in well-draining soil. Cover the seeds very lightly with a thin sprinkle of further soil – only lightly because this species needs some light to reach the seeds to germinate.

NOTE: Seeds can be sown straight into the garden bed also.

Step 2

Water with either a spray bottle or very light misting hose to not disturb the seeds you have just sown. Move to a warm, full sun or partial shade position and keep moist throughout the entire germination process.

Ideal temperature for germination is 17-22°C/65-75°F

Seeds should germinate if kept in ideal conditions within 2-3 weeks.

Step 3

Can be transplanted very gently once they are strong enough to be handled.
Choose either a full sun or partial shade position. This species is perfect for rockeries as a ground cover or in spots where you would like some colour to spill over a garden wall. They are also great in pots or for hanging baskets.

Plant out into garden once any chance of frost has passed. Frost tolerant once established but not as tiny seedlings. Highly wind tolerant.

Space between plants should be approximately 1 foot apart.

Aubrieta is an evergreen perennial that can flower as early as 10-12 weeks!
