The other three include Boswellia sacra from southern Arabia, Boswellia papyrifera of Sudan and Ethiopia and Boswellia frereana which is native to the Horn of Africa and responsible for producing the most Frankincense resin.

Boswellia serrata is not only unique in that it is from India, but that it also tolerates cooler climates than the other varieties.

FACTS ABOUT BOSWELLIA SERRATA (Indian Frankincense)

Boswellia is an aromatic gum resin containing an oil that is used in incense and perfumes. A mature tree can produce between 1-1.5kg of resin per year.

HOW TO GROW BOSWELLIA SERRATA (Indian Frankincense)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds for around 12 hours or overnight to allow water to soften the outer layer.

Step 2

Sow the seeds around 5mm deep in small pots filled with a well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal as it will ensure moisture drains through.

Seeds require a moist, warm soil to germinate with temperatures ranging from between 20-25°C / 68-77°F.

Keep the soil moist and leave the pots in a sunny location, except on extremely hot days.

In ideal conditions, seed germination can take between 21-28 days.

Step 3

It is recommended to grow Indian Frankincense seedlings in pots for their first twelve months, upgrading the size as necessary. This allows the young plants to establish themselves before transplanting and then they can also be moved for protection if temperatures fall below 5°C /41°F.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 15°C/59°F.

The final position should be in full sun. Once established, plants can tolerate light frosts and cold temperatures down to 0°C/32°F.

The Indian Frankincense tree usually takes between 8-10 years to reach an age where the resin is ready to harvest.
