Cassia javanica is a tropical plant and does not tolerate frost. In ideal conditions it can become invasive and has been declared a weed in Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.

The Apple Blossom flowers continuously from Spring until Autumn. Then the flowers fall to make a beautiful carpet of pink on the ground.

Other common names include Pink Cassia, Rainbow Shower, Javanese Cassia, and the Pink Shower Tree.

Apple Blossoms are also a great source of firewood.

Growth

Cassia javanica is a medium-sized deciduous tree that grows to a height of up to 30 metres (100 feet). It prefers full sun and a warm, humid climate. In its native climate the average temperatures are 19°C to 25°C (66 to 77°F) though it can tolerate ranges between 12 to 35°C (53 to 95°F). Colder climates can cause damage or trigger leaves to fall earlier than usual. Pink flowers bloom from spring to autumn. Their yellow-coloured stamens found in open clusters.

The ground under the tree is usually covered with a carpet of pink towards the end of the flowering season.

Apple Blossom seed pods turn black on maturity.

HOW TO GROW CASSIA JAVANICA (Apple Blossom)

Step 1

Begin with scarifying each seed by gently scraping them against a rough surface such as concrete. Just enough to weaken the outer kernel of the seed.

Then soak the seeds an hour in water of room temperature. Prepare a loamy/sandy soil of pots that are at least 10cm ( 4 inches ) wide. If starting during daytime temperatures below 20°C / 68°F a heat mat or somewhere that is consistently warm is recommended.

Step 2

Sow each seed roughly 1cm deep into pre-moistened soil. To increase humidity during germination, cover the pots with a clear plastic, such as glad wrap.

Step 3

Keep the soil moist but not wet by checking it every two days and add water as necessary by using a light mist. The plastic cover should be carefully replaced each time. If available, check the soil temperature.

Some of the seeds should germinate after 2-3 weeks but can sprout as early as 7 days or take up to 6 months. The germination rate (50-80%) suggests not all will succeed.

Once seedlings germinate, remove the plastic cover and move to them to a location where they will receive around 3-4 hours of morning sunshine each day. Don’t leave them outside if the temperature day or night will fall below 10°C / 50°F.

Step 4

Gradually increase the sunshine they receive by increasing their sunlight in weekly stages. Until plants reach 30 cm (12 inches) high, keep them in pots by up sizing as roots begin to show through the bottom. In temperate climates, plants should only be grown in pots to protect them from winter conditions. Apple Blossom trees are not recommended for cold climates such as those in the Snowy Mountains, Blue Mountains, Canberra, and Tasmania.

Step 5

Transplant during spring well past the last frost and ensure they are in a location where they will receive maximum sunlight. Mulching can help to keep the roots warmer when winter returns and protect them from drying out over summer.

Apple Blossom trees mature fast and can be flowering within the year but more often take 2-3 years.
