Growth

Castanospermum australe is a native rainforest tree that grows to a maximum of height of 40 metres (130 feet) and spreads to a width of up to 8 metres (25 feet). The leaves are pinnate, dark green, glossy and grow on low spreading branches. Each leaf grows to 15cm (6 inches) long and contains 10-15 leaflets. The flowers are bicoloured yellow and red and bloom during Spring on mature trees. Fruits are inside a cylindrical pod that grows to 20cm (8 inches) and are similar in size and shape to a large chestnut.

Although the Magic Bean is native to warm, tropical climates they are now commonly grown indoors in temperate regions around the world. Established trees can tolerate a short period of frost and have been known to succeed outdoors in Melbourne and in areas of southern England (Cornwall).

When growing them as houseplants indoors, the Magic Bean adapts well to the reduction in space and adjusts its size to suit.

FACTS ABOUT CASTANOSPERMUM AUSTRALE

The fresh raw seed of the Magic Bean can be harmful as it contains a high level of saponins. Australian aborigines finely slice the seeds, soaked them in running water for 10 days and then roasted and ground them into powder.

When roasted, Magic Bean seeds have a similar taste to a sweet chestnut.

Castanospermum australe is an important tree among indigenous tribes of Australia. The wood was used to make spears, its mature seeds ground down for food and the bark fibre was adequate for making baskets and animal traps.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW CASTANOSPERMUM AUSTRALE (Magic Bean)

Step 1

Prior to sowing, be aware that temperatures below 10°C/50°F will significantly reduce the chances of germination. If outdoor conditions will be colder, plan to sow into containers and keep indoors or use a heat mat until the weather warms, or the plant is fully established.

Soak seeds for 24 hours prior to sowing. This should improve germination response but is not essential.

Step 2

If sowing directly into the ground the soil requires loosening to allow for the roots to penetrate. Dig a hole roughly 50cm (2 feet) deep and 30cm (1 foot) wide and then replace the soil back into the hole.

If sowing into a container, provide each seed a container that is at least 14cm (5.5 inches) wide a soil mixture of half sand and half garden soil. The sand ensures that the soil doesn’t become too compacted and allows for adequate drainage.

Either in the ground or in containers, sow the seeds with the part that looks like a bottom facing upwards. Cover the seed with roughly 1cm (half an inch) of soil and water in well.

Ideal germination temperature is 18-25°C/65-80°F and will require regular watering during the germination period which can take between 3-12 weeks.

Step 3

If growing outdoors, seedlings may require regular watering if they are positioned in direct sunlight or exposed to hot summer days.

If growing in containers, gradually increase the amount of sunlight young seedlings receive each day. If the plan is to keep them indoors as a houseplant leave them in a position that is bright and don’t let the soil dry out completely.

Step 4

Transplant to final position only after the threat of frost has passed.

Once established, will survive cold temperatures to down to 0°C/33°F but not for long periods. Mulching the base is recommended for temperate winters as is regular watering during summer.

Magic Bean trees can take between 8-10 years to fully mature and produce blooms.
