Suitable for Cold to Tropical climates.

Cat Grass ( Dactylis glomerata ) is a perennial grass that is native to Great Britain and gets its common name because of its attraction for cats. Cats naturally chew on grass in the wild and there are many potential reasons or theories of why they do this. Research suggests that it is possible that cats ingest grass to aid in digestion, being carnivores they often eat parts of their prey that are not easily digestible, like feathers for example.  It is believed that grasses can help them to vomit up anything that cannot be digested and also as a laxative to move things along in the opposite direction.

This species of grass is quite attractive to cats and preferred over lawn grass for health reasons. Cat Grass also provides vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to cats and can aid in circulation and pain relief. It also has the added bonus of freshening their breath.

Growing Cat Grass is a great idea, especially if you have indoor cats. Completely indoor cats can benefit from having a pot of cat grass indoors as they do not have access to grasses otherwise.

Growth

Dactylis glomerata is a cool climate grass that grows in tufts that can get up to 1 metre tall, this may come as a surprise to many cat lovers because the grass can be lucky to get past a couple of inches once it is supplied to the cat/s. Another fact that may surprise some is that this grass can live for well over a decade, the exact potential age if unknown due to harvesting.

Cat Grass can be grown in pots and containers and is usually ready to give to your furry family members from about 2 weeks after sowing.

Other common names for this species are Cock’s Foot and Orchard Grass.

FACTS ABOUT DACTYLIS GLOMERATA (Cat Grass)

Dactylis glomerata is handy to have around the home if you are both an indoor plant and indoor cat lover. This can assist in keeping the cat focused on cat grass instead of choosing your other plants. Some cat’s seem to love nibbling on plants and many indoor plants are very toxic to cats (we recommend these being out of your cats reach, if you must have both).

Grass contains folic acid, fibre, niacin and vitamins A, B & D. It also contains a substance called Chlorophyll that can aid in pain relief and infection but also helps to freshen breath.

HOW TO GROW DACTYLIS GLOMERATA (Cat Grass)

Step 1
You can start cat grass at any time of the year if doing so indoors. If growing outdoors, wait until spring to sow.

We recommend using an organic soil that is free from any potential chemicals that could be detrimental to your cats health.

Fill your pot or tray with pre-moistened organic soil leaving approximately 5 cm spare from the top. Sprinkle the seeds generously on the surface and add a further 1/2 cm/1/4 inch of moistened soil over the top.

Soil should be moist, not wet – if you can squeeze water out of it; it is too wet.

Step 2
Place some plastic wrap over the top of the container you have chosen leaving a corner uncovered to allow air circulation. This is done for two reasons, firstly to help keep the environment around the seeds moister and secondly to stop your fur baby from digging, eating or toileting in the container before your cat grass is ready.

Place the container of sown seeds in a dimly lit area that is room temperature until you start to see sprouts popping up, this is usually around 2-4 days. If the top layer of soil starts to dry use a mist spray bottle to water. Avoid watering with anything that will add too much moisture if the bottom of your container is solid (doesn’t have drainage holes) as this will create a muddy wet base at the bottom of your pot and cause root rot, mould to grow and your grass will be no good.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 16-24°C / 60-75°F

Step 3
Once sprouts have begun to appear remove the plastic wrap and place the container into a well lit area with indirect sunlight – preferably a spot with similar lighting to it’s final location. Don’t allow the soil to dry out completely, moisten the soil lightly with your mist spray bottle as the top layer dries out.

Step 4
Cat grass is generally ready for you furry family member/s at around two weeks, when it should be around 12cm tall. Depending on your cat the grass should last around 3-4 weeks until it will need replacing with a fresh batch.
