Other common names include Malay Ginger, Spiral Flag, Wild Ginger, or Cane Reed.

The white crepe-like flowers usually bloom just after the rainy season. Leaves are velvet to the touch and the branches tend to grow in a spiral formation (see pictures).

This particular species has become a popular ornamental in subtropical and tropical regions around the world.

Growth

Cheilocostus speciosus is a fast growing, perennial plant that reaches a compact height of 2 metres (6 feet). It thrives in shady, moist locations in tropical climates. In ideal conditions, Crepe Gingers can reach flowering stage in less than twelve months. Flowers are white and bloom atop of red bracts that grow on the end of long stems.

The plant spreads by rapidly growing young shoots from the bottom which can reach 1 metre in width by their second year. If grown in garden beds Crepe Ginger has the potential to out compete all the other plants.

Crepe Gingers are pollinated by a range of insects including bees, ants and even flies.

HOW TO GROW CHEILOCOSTUS SPECIOSUS (Crepe Ginger)

Step 1

Prepare pots or tray with soil-based compost and sow the seeds about the depth of their own width.  Moisten and place into a spot with plenty of light. Temperatures for germination need to be around 15-20°C (60-70°F). If this is difficult, adding plastic wrap to cover can help increase and maintain warmer temperatures.

Check seeds every two or three days, remove any that germinate and keep moist by using a mist spray, so the seeds aren’t disturbed.

Step 2

Keep soil moist during germination (not soaked), be sure not to it to dry out completely as this will kill the embryo. Seeds should start to germinate in between 2-6 weeks although can take a bit longer if not in their ideal temperature range (in Step 1).

Step 3

Once the seedlings can be handled, they can be transplanted directly into ground. Choose a shady position where the soil will remain moist. If growing Crepe Ginger indoors or in a temperate climate keep them in pots so they can be moved as required. Temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can cause damage to young seedlings while mature plants won’t tolerate anywhere below 5°C (41°F).

In humid, moist, and shady locations the Crepe Ginger will flower within 12-18 months.
