This species prefers tropical climates but will grow and flower happily in temperate climates too. The Firecracker flower is often grown as an indoor houseplant and will tolerate both full sun and full shade, however thrives best with a mixture of the two. In temperate climates it will need some protection from the winter cold.

Growth

Crossandra infundibuliformis can grow up to 1 metre tall and 60 cm’s wide. It has ovate, dark green leaves that are glossy and flowers that can range in colour from yellow-orange to orange-coral-pink. The flowers are asymmetrical, with the petals being off to one side and almost fan like. The flower stalk looks almost like a large head of wheat as it develops, until of course the pretty flower start popping out.
The Firecracker Flower can tolerate high humidity and hot temperatures but is not drought tolerant and will let you know when it is thirsty with drooping leaves. The leaves usually spring back to life quite quickly, as long as the plant hasn’t been left dry for too long.

Pinching away growth to encourage bushiness, especially if growing in a shadier spot as they can become a little leggy. The seeds are harvested from an orange-coral coloured plant.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW CROSSANDRA INFUNDIBULIFORMIS (Firecracker Flower)

Step 1
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours, changing the water after 12 hours to prevent bacteria growth.

Step 2
Prepare a seedling tray or pot/s with either a moist peat or sphagnum moss, or a moist well draining seed raising/sand mix.

Sow seeds approximately 2-3 mm deep and cover the tray/pots with clear plastic, glass or plastic kitchen wrap (Glad wrap). This will help keep humidity and moisture levels at their peak.

Step 3
Place the tray/pot into an area that is well lit but out of direct harsh sun. Do not allow the soil to dry out at any stage during germination, moisten with a mist spray if/when necessary.

Temperatures required for germination are between 22-26°C / 72-79°F

Germination should begin around 14-21 days

Step 4
Seedlings can be transplanted if needed once they have 2-4 true leaves and are large enough to handle. A well draining, nutrient-humus rich soil is best.
Can be transplanted into the garden at around 2 months.

When planting outdoors, choose a location that is appropriate to your climate. In hot climates they thrive best in full sun with some afternoon shade. In temperate climates they are best positioned in a location that receives lots of light but is protected from frost, like an outdoor area with laser light roofing. If in doubt, grow in a pot and take indoors for the winter.

Indoors a well lit room is best, a sunny windowsill will be appreciated during the winter.

Firecracker flower although very heat tolerant, is not drought tolerant. The soil must be well draining but kept moist – not wet.

Crossandra infundibuliformis can begin flowering as early as 6 months of age.
