Echium candicans is a popular ornamental that brings many beneficial insects into the garden. The plant can handle light frosts, dry periods and tolerates a little bit of shade. Many gardeners take full advantage of the beautiful flowers by planting them as hedges or as garden borders where they can easily catch the eye.

Growth

Echium candicans is a biennial sometimes perennial herbaceous flower that grows to a maximum height of 1.8 metres (6 feet) but spreads wider at up to 3 metres (10 feet). Depending on the climatic conditions this species can grow as a biennial in coastal regions but can behave as a perennial when grown inland. Regardless of location, the Pride of Madeira won’t produce flowers until its second full growing season and will not fully develop if temperatures remain consistently below 10°C/50°F.

The plant grows long, greyish/green leaves and then stunning long spires of bluish/purple flowers from late Spring and throughout the Summer. To get the full appreciation, Pride of Madeira requires plenty of space in the garden given they can grow so wide.

During summer they do not require much watering or maintenance, though removing flower heads as they wilt will encourage compact growth and prevent excessive self-seeding.

FACTS ABOUT ECHIUM CANDICANS

Echium candicans is native only to Madeira and is absent from all the other islands within the Canary Islands archipelago. It often grows at an altitude of about 800 to 1200 metres (2600 to 3500 feet) in the central part of the island.

The Latin epithet, ‘candicans’ is translated to ‘shining white’ which is the flower colour from another variation of the species but is clearly misnamed for this the Pride of Madeira.

Despite its beauty, the parts of the Pride of Madeira plant are toxic to both humans and animals.

HOW TO GROW ECHIUM CANDICANS (Pride of Madeira)

Step 1

After the threat of frost has passed sow Echium seeds directly into a garden bed of loosened soil. Sow them onto the surface of the soil and cover very lightly. Echium seeds require light to germinate.

Moisten the soil and keep lightly watered until the seeds germinate which should take between 1 and 3 weeks.

If sowing into containers to avoid winter temperatures, use a decent sized pot 14cm (5.5 inches) and sow 2-3 seeds in each.

Mixing a portion of garden sand through the soil helps with drainage and allows the roots to penetrate with less resistance. Moisten and leave in a bright and sunny position but be sure to keep checking and watering if the soil becomes too dry.

In case you have a heat mat the ideal temperature for germinating Echium seeds is between 15-20ºC/59-68ºF.

Step 2

Once Echiums begin to sprout, keep adding minimal water and they will grow quickly. If growing in containers, gradually increase the number of exposed sunlight hours.

The bigger your Echium plants are prior to the following winter, the more likely they are to survive through to the next spring.

Step 3

Seedlings can be transplanted when they reach 10cm (4 inches) or when the daytime temperatures outside regularly reach 15ºC/59ºF.

When choosing a location for the seedling in colder climates a position in full sun or where they will get at least six hours of sunlight is ideal. Being native to a warm region established Echiums will thrive in full sunshine and not require too much watering.

Step 4

Although they enjoy warmer climates, Echiums are perennials that will withstand cold temperate winters without too much stress.

As perennials, it takes until the second growing season to start producing blooms.
