Dahlia x hybrida – Fresco Dahlia Mix

$4.00$5.00

Fresco Dahlia Mix ( Dahlia x hybrida ) is a beautiful annual flower that produces semi-double to double blooms. This particular variety is a dwarf and produces flowers that include red, violet, yellow, white and rose. Fresco Dahlia Mix is also a bit shorter than other Dahlias which makes them an early bloomer. They enjoy warmer temperatures and can be grown either in pots or in directly into the garden. Dahlias can often bloom continuously throughout the warmer months.

Suitable for Temperate, Sub Tropical and Tropical climates.

Dahlias are grown in all corners of Australia and make beautiful border plants.

Growth

Fresco Dahlia Mix is an annual flower that reaches up to 30 cm (12 inches). The best time to start Dahlias is around the Melbourne Cup (early November) when they grow quickly and avoid blooming during the heat of summer. In warmer climates they can be started in Late Winter or Summer and can sometimes bloom all year round. Regular watering and fertiliser is a staple for Dahlias if wanting to produce a lot of flowers.

Dahlias respond well to a balanced fertiliser such as cow or chicken manure but if that’s not available. Choose a fertiliser that is doesn’t have more than 8 as its Nitrogen content. High levels of Nitrogen encourages rapid and strong growth for stems, leaves and tubers but also reduces the number of blooms. When preparing for shows, seasoned gardeners will include Iron and Potash sulphate in their fortnightly feeds.

Quite often Dahlia plants will require a support such as a stake or trellis to cater for their strong growth.

FACTS ABOUT FRESCO DAHLIA MIXED

Dahlia petals and tubers were eaten by ancient Aztec civilizations as vegetables and was also used to produce a form of antibiotic.

Native to Mexico, the first European to report about Dahlias was Spainard Francisco Hernandez in 1525. Hernandez described the plant as a water pipe in reference to their long hollow stems. From thereon a long and fascinating history ensued for this popular modern annual. Once the Dahlia arrived in Europe it took just 30 years to have over 300 varieties growing across the continent.

In Scotland, an extraordinary prize of 2000 pounds (1846) was offered to anyone who could produce a blue dahlia flower. As of 2020, this is yet to be achieved.

HOW TO GROW FRESCO DAHLIA MIX (Dahlia x hybrida)

Note: According to the Dahlia Society of Australia the prime time to sow Dahlia seeds is the first and second weeks of November (late spring). The main reason for early November is to avoid blooming during the hot summer days. The other key recommendation is that the final position for the Dahlia be facing the east so that they receive all their sunshine in the morning. Outside of November, only warmer climates could sow any time of the year. Places such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney shouldn’t sow during Autumn or Winter unless they are starting them indoors.

Step 1

Sow Dahlia seeds about 1-2 mm deep in a nutrient-rich and well draining soil. Dahlias can be started in trays or small pots but because of the large tubers they eventually grow, its much easier to sow directly into a garden bed.

Moisten the soil and leave the seeds in a place where its bright, but not in direct sunlight. As long as the soil doesn’t dry out and the daytime temperatures stay between 15 to 25°C / 59 to 77°F, germination should take 7-12 days. During colder temperatures plastic wrap can be added to cover and increase warmth and humidity. A light misting spray every few days is ideal.

Step 2

Once seedlings appear remove plastic and/or move them into a location where they will get some morning sunlight. Dahlias can be transplanted directly into the ground once soil temperatures are over 15°C / 77°F and when they have grown their second set of leaves.

Dahlias will grow quickly and can require a support such as a stake or trellis. They require regular watering and to achieve the best blooms a fortnightly fertiliser is recommended. Using a similar fertiliser to one used for tomatoes is suitable. Composted cow or chicken manure is the best organic option.

Step 3

When budding or flowers start to occur, extra water and fertiliser should be applied. For a bushier, more dense flower display, trim the main stem.

Picking or cutting off the flowers encourages new growth and Dahlias will continue to bloom for 3-5 months or until late autumn.

Flowering can begin to occur between 8-12 weeks.

Step 4

As winter approaches the plants leaves will begin to brown off. Underneath the soil will be a tuber which will require removal in case they get wet and rot. These tubers can be kept indoors (or in the garage) and replanted again when the weather warms up in Spring.
