Growth

Gentiana lutea is a herbaceous perennial that grows slowly to a height of 2 metres (7 feet) and rarely wider than 60cm (24 inches). Yellow Gentian tolerates most soil types as long as they stay moist with good drainage and adapts to part-shade locations although they prefer full sun.

Leaves are lanceolate to elliptic and can grow to 30 cm (12 inches) long by 12 cm (almost 5 inches) across. The yellow flowers on mature plants bloom from mid to late Summer with the corolla separated nearly to the base into 5-7 narrow petals.

In the wild, this species thrives on mountain ranges, remaining dormant during the cold winters and then growing slowly but steadily during the brief warmer months. When cultivated at home, it can take between 2-5 years for the plants to begin flowering.

Commercially, the highly sought after roots of Yellow Gentian are harvested in either their 2nd or 3rd Autumn with any flowers usually pinched off prior to blooming. Studies have found that the roots of plants that haven’t flowered contain a higher concentration of the medicinal benefits.

FACTS ABOUT GENTIANA LUTEA (Yellow Gentian)

The botanical name Gentiana lutea is a tribute to the Illyrian King (modern day Albania), Gentius, who is said to have discovered that the herb had medicinal properties. Gentius is featured today on two Albanian banknotes.

The American soft drink Moxie contains extracts of the Gentian root, while it is also used in France to make the bitter Genziana liqueurs such as Salers and Aveze.

Gentiana lutea is a considered an endangered species and is no longer harvested in the wilderness in France. There is even a European Gentian Association in Lausanne, Switzerland which aims to develop further knowledge of this species and others within the Gentianaceae family.

HOW TO GROW GENTIANA LUTEA (Yellow Gentian)

Step 1

To break the dormancy of the Yellow Gentian seeds, a 5-6 week period of cold stratification is required. This can be achieved by sowing seeds in the middle of Winter and then keeping them moist in time for germination in Spring.

However, a better ratio of success is achieved by mixing the seeds with moist soil and storing them in the fridge for 5-6 weeks. Check once a week to ensure soil remains moist.

Step 2

Then sow the seeds by pressing them gently into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal.

Cover the seeds very lightly with soil and then cover the pots with a cloth or newspaper to provide the dark environment required to germinate. Keep the soil moist throughout by mist spraying regularly.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 5-10°C / 41-50°F. Germination can take between 6-8 weeks.

Step 3

It is recommended to grow Yellow Gentian seedlings in pots for their first two seasons as they are slow growers and can be moved to suit temperature and growing conditions.

As seedlings progress, gradually increase the number of sunlight hours and avoid exposure to the afternoon sun.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 10°C/50°F.

Their final position should be in full sun or part-shade. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -10°C/14°F.

Yellow Gentian is a slow growing plant that can take between 2-5 years to produce their first flowers.
