Growth

Gomphrena canescens is a native annual or perennial that reaches heights of up to 90 cm (3 feet). Native to regions of high rainfall, Pink Billy Buttons need plenty of regular watering and good soil drainage. Often found flowering in large clusters in disturbed areas and rocky slopes.

Seeds are fairly easy to germinate either in pots or directly into the ground. With regular moist soil, young seedlings are quick to grow.

Globe blooms of white, pink and sometimes purple take roughly three months from seed. In the wild, they often flower in fields from late Summer to early Spring providing beautiful colour during the dry winters.

HOW TO GROW GOMPHRENA CANESCENS (Pink Billy Buttons)

Step 1

The best time of year to sow them is when
daytime temperatures are regularly above 20°C/68°F. As they only take around twelve weeks to flower some warmer climates can afford to start them both in Spring and Autumn.

Sow seeds just below the surface of a potting
mix that includes either half perlite or half sand,
to ensure it drains well. Can also be sown directly into a garden bed and then lightly covered.

Moisten the soil and leave pots in a warm, shady location.

This species grows wild in the tropical regions of Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia so enjoys regular watering.

Note that while they are a tropical species, there are some growing in botanical gardens in both Mt Annan (south of Sydney) and Cranbourne (south-east of Melbourne).

Step 2

Water every couple of days until germination which can be erratic and take 2-3 weeks.

Step 3

If potted, seedlings can be transplanted to their final position in the garden once they have 2-3 true leaves.

Pink Billy Buttons are a perennial in warmer climates and can be grown as an annual in temperate or cold climates. They usually flower within 10-12 weeks of sowing.
