Hardenbergia comptoniana is a popular native tree species that is also called the Native Lilac, Wild Sarsaparilla, Native Sarsaparilla and Wild Wisteria Climber. It has no botanical relationship with the more popular Chinese Wisteria, but is much easier and faster to grow.

In ideal conditions, the Australian Wisteria can start to produce flowers within twelve months from seed germination. This species’ native environment is along the Western Australian coastline from Geraldton down to Albany.

Growth

Hardenbergia comptoniana is a vigorous perennial vine that can grow to a size of 3 metres x 3 metres (9 feet) in around two years. Australian Wisteria is capable of growing in partly shady locations as well as boggy or clayish soils. They are also tolerant of salty coastal conditions and can handle mild frosts.

Young plants require trellises to climb onto and can be shaped to suit the grower. It is best to setup any support structures during the sowing or transplanting stage so that the roots aren’t disturbed.

Unlike Chinese Wisteria which can take up to 20 years to start flowering, the Australian Wisteria can produce blooms within 12-18 months. To view the Chinese Wisteria please click here.

HOW TO GROW HARDENBERGIA COMPTONIANA (Australian Wisteria)

Step 1

Soak the seeds overnight, starting the water just a little cooler than boiling to soften the outer layer.

Step 2

Drain the water and then sow 2-3 seeds in small pots of garden soil. Press the seeds lightly into the surface and cover lightly. Moisten gently by using a misting spray.

Leave the pots in a move them into a well-lit position out of direct sunlight. Keep moist during entire germination process.

Average germination takes between 14-21 days in ideal conditions.

Seeds can also be sown directly into their final position which should be in part-shade position that avoids the afternoon sun. If sown directly, prior preparation of a trellis is recommended so that the roots of young plants aren’t disturbed.

Step 3

When seedlings emerge, move them into a position where they can harden off with soft morning sunshine. Light watering should only be applied when the soil is dry.

Transfer seedlings to a larger pot or directly into their final position when they either outgrow their small pot or a large enough to handle.

Until they reach an established height of around 30cm (1 foot) young seedlings should not be exposed to harsh Summer afternoon sun.

At 30cm (1 foot), they are ready to start being trained to grow onto their trellis.

Step 4

Once established, Australian Wisterias will survive temperatures down to -10°C / 14°F and not require much watering until the flowering season in late Winter.

Australian Wisterias can start flowering in as little as 12-18 months.
