It is also commonly known as Giant Crepe Myrtle, Banaba Plant or the Pride of India.

Growth

Lagerstroemia speciosa is a deciduous tropical tree that reaches heights of up to 20 metres (66 feet) in their native habitat. In cultivation, the more common height is around 8 metres (25 feet). Queens Crepe Myrtle is widely grown in plantations for its good quality wood. In nurseries, it is a popular ornamental, renowned for their long-season flowering during summer. It is one of only a few deciduous species native to tropical regions.

Although a tropical tree, there are many specimens across the suburbs of temperate Melbourne. They are also very prominent on the drive to Bright, Victoria which is effectively alpine in temperature during winter.

Leaves are oval to elliptic and reach up to 15 cm (6 inches) and have an acute apex. Flowers contain six petals which vary from pink to purple in colour. In the right climates, flowering occurs for up to four months from late spring into the early autumn.

One common problem many gardeners have when starting the Pride of India from seed is soil depth. A recent study found that germination rates of up to 95% were achieved when seeds were surface sown or lightly covered. This suggests the seeds are positively photoblastic.

HOW TO GROW LAGERSTROEMIA SPECIOSA (Queen’s Crepe Myrtle)

Step 1

Place seeds into a waterproof container and boil the kettle. Once boiled, allow the kettle to stand for 10 minutes and pour over the seeds. Leave to soak for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, remove any seeds that have visibly swollen and move to Step 2. Those not yet swollen, can repeat the process of hot water for another 24 hours.

Step 2

Prepare seed trays or small pots of moist seed raising mix. Sow the seeds pressing them gently into the surface of the soil and add just a thin layer of soil on top. Any deeper than 10mm will reduce seed germination dramatically as Queens Crepe Myrtle is positively photoblastic and requires some light.

Add more moisture by using a mist and leave in a warm, shaded location.

Germination takes around 2-4 weeks when temperatures of 20-25°C / 68-77°F are consistently achieved. During colder months it may be worth starting indoors, inside a greenhouse or by using a heat mat to increase the temperature.

Covering with plastic can also help but will need to be immediately removed once sprouts start to appear.

Step 3

Once sprouted, move seedlings to a position where they will receive the softer sunlight of the morning and gradually increase exposure of the subsequent weeks. Cool temperatures are welcomed at this period to develop strength but move them indoors if frost is expected.

Once established, plants can withstand cold temperatures but seedlings can easily be killed off with a light frost.

Step 4

Seedlings can be transplanted easily when frost has passed in Spring. As plants reach a height of around 30 cm (1 foot) a bamboo stake is recommended to help train the trunk to grow straight.

Mulch around the base in time for their first winter outdoors.

Queens Crepe Myrtle can take 3-6 years to start flowering.
