Growth

Leontopodium alpinum is mountain flower that reaches the short height of around 20 cm (8 inches) in the wild and up to 40 cm (16 inches) in cultivation. Being native to Swiss mountain ranges, Edelweiss is usually short-lived given only the time afforded during the peak of summer. In cultivation, there is often longer time to develop and grow during the warmer months and in some warmer climates will do well during winter.

The flower is technically not a flower but a bloom consisting of 50 to 500 tiny little flowers that form into a double-star formation. Over time the plant spreads via rhizomes to from colonies. They sit underground during the long winters of the mountainous ranges they are found. Then grow again quickly during the short spell of warm weather. White velvet-like leaves surround the flower bracts and with small dense hairs help to protect the plant from the extreme cold atop a Swiss mountain.

HOW TO GROW LEONTOPODIUM ALPINUM (Edelweiss)

Step 1

Surface sow directly onto ground or in small pots by pressing seeds into the soil. Soil should be well draining.

Edelweiss can be started indoors up to 6 weeks before last frost and planted out once the weather starts to warm up a bit in spring.

Keep soil moist but not wet by using a mist spray bottle to avoid disturbing the seeds or water using a tray underneath and letting the soil absorb the water from below.

Step 2

Place in a bright, sunny position out of harsh direct sun if your climate is very warm and do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Seeds should germinate after 3-4 weeks in ideal conditions. Ideal germination temperatures range between 12-20°C / 53-68°F.

Step 3

Before planting out harden your seedlings off if they have not already been exposed to full sun conditions. Place seedlings into full sun conditions slowly over a week or so, starting with an hour and then gradually increasing the exposure each day.

Final position should be in full sun. Space seedlings roughly one foot apart once planting out.

Don’t over water during transplanting as Edelweiss do not like having overly wet soil, during winter they may not need any additional watering at all once in the ground.

Edelweiss takes roughly 90-120 days to flower.
