Also commonly known as Joy Perfume Tree, Yellow Jade Orchid Tree and Himalayan Champaca.

Champak Magnolia is quite challenging to grow from seed and is rarely done commercially. The more common method for nurseries is to take cuttings from a mature tree and then graft them onto a rootstock. Their strike rate is commonly low and seed viability is short, usually only lasting around six months. We regularly source fresh stock from India and store them at consistent temperatures.

Growth

Magnolia champaca is a large evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 50 metres (160 feet) in the wild but rarely above 10 metres (33 feet) when growing at home. Of all the Magnolias, this species is by far the fussiest. The require warm temperatures, protection from frost and generally like a good drink. Champak Magnolia’s also dislike too much water so a soil with good drainage is important.

The most important factors when growing Champak Magnolia is the temperature. Compared to most seeds they need a fairly high temperature to get started at between 25-30°C / 77-86°F. Keeping them this warm may require a heat mat or moving into a greenhouse during Spring. The second key is frost or even temperatures below 5°C / 41°F which can cause serious damage to the roots. In Melbourne, we move them into our greenhouse from late April until around October.

Flowering starts to occur around 4-5 years after germination. Blooms range between cream to orange and start in early Summer and continue into the middle of Autumn.

HOW TO GROW MAGNOLIA CHAMPACA (Champak Magnolia)

Note: Champak Magnolia seeds can be difficult to germinate and have fairly low success rates. These instructions are where we have found the most success.

Step 1

Soak your seeds in a container of water (room temperature) for at least 24 hours. They can be left in water for a couple of days but be sure to change the water every 24 hours to avoid bacteria building up.

Step 2

Magnolia seeds require varying periods of stratification for them to germinate.  Place Champak Magnolia seeds into a plastic zip-lock bag with enough moist sand to cover the seeds without losing them in it.

Label it with the date and place into the fridge for around 8 weeks.

Step 3

Prepare small pots with a moist soil mixture that contains at least some sand or perlite to ensure the medium drains well.

Then sow one seed per pot by pressing the seed into the surface, leaving a small fraction of the seed visible.

Moisten the soil mixture and place the pots into a warm, sunny location. Do not let the soil (medium) dry out at any stage as the seeds embryo will die off quickly but also do not keep the soil too wet as this may rot the seeds. Including sand in the mixture is a key component to not only allowing for drainage but helps to wear the outer layer of the seed.

The ideal temperature for germinating Champak Magnolia seeds is a very warm 25-30°C / 77-86°F. This may require a heat mat or a greenhouse during Spring which is when we have achieved success here in Melbourne.

Allow 4-5 weeks to see seedlings sprout. The better the conditions, the faster the germination – germination will be slower in cooler temperatures.

Step 4

Transplant when plants reach 10-15cm in height and after the last frost. They prefer a position of full sun but seedlings will appreciate some shade for the first couple of summers.

Step 5

Keep base mulched at the base for winter as temperatures below 5°C / 41°F can cause serious damage to the plant and will often kill young seedlings. In Melbourne, we grow them only in containers so that they can be moved indoors or into a greenhouse during winter.

Once established they will require regular water and a bit extra when flowering.

Champak Magnolia Trees take 4-5 years to begin flowering.
