Growth

Magnolia grandiflora is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 15 metres (50 feet) and rarely up to 27 metres (90 feet). The Southern Magnolia enjoys sub-tropical climates in their native range from North Carolina to Florida in the United States. This would roughly translate to coastal regions of New South Wales from as far south as Sydney to around Townsville in Queensland.

Southern Magnolias have moderately stout twigs that with brown wooly hairs. The large leaves, simple and alternate are shaped oval to elliptical and can reach 20 cm (8 inches) long. They are very thick and leathery, without teeth and have a shiny surface. The leaves can persist on the tree for about two years.

From late Spring mature trees produce large white flowers that persist until the Autumn. This species has the largest flower of the Magnolias stretching up to a huge 20 cm (8 inches).

FACTS ABOUT MAGNOLIA GRANDIFLORA (Southern Magnolia)

An iconic Southern Magnolia was planted by President Andrew Jackson nearly 200 years ago and was the oldest tree on the White House grounds. For decades it was on the back of the $20 bill as part of the South Front.

Southern Magnolias produce seeds by 10 years of age, although peak seed production is closer to 25 years of age.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW HUMULUS LUPULUS (Common Hops)

Note: Southern Magnolia seeds can be difficult to germinate and have fairly low germination rates (50%). These instructions are where we have found the most success.

Step 1

Soak your seeds in a container of water (room temperature) for at least 24 hours. They can be left in water for a couple of days but be sure to change the water every 24 hours to avoid bacteria building up.

Step 2

Magnolia seeds require varying periods of stratification for them to germinate.  Place Southern Magnolia seeds into a plastic zip-lock bag with enough moist sand to cover the seeds without losing them in it.

Label it with the date and place into the fridge for around 2 months.

Step 3

Prepare small pots with a moist soil mixture that contains at least some sand or perlite to ensure the medium drains well.

Then sow one seed per pot around 5mm deep.

Moisten the soil mixture and place the pots into a warm, sunny location. Do not let the soil (medium) dry out at any stage as the seeds embryo will die off quickly but also do not keep the soil too wet as this may rot the seeds. Including sand in the mixture is a key component to not only allowing for drainage but helps to wear the outer layer of the seed.

The ideal temperature for germinating Southern Magnolia seeds is a very warm 22-27°C / 71-80°F. This may require a heat mat or a greenhouse during Spring which is when we have achieved success here in Melbourne.

Allow 4-6 weeks to see seedlings sprout. The better the conditions, the faster the germination – germination will be slower in cooler temperatures.

Step 4

Transplant when plants reach 10-15cm in height and after the last frost. They prefer a position of full sun but seedlings will appreciate some shade for the first couple of summers.

Step 5

Keep base mulched at the base for winter as temperatures below 5°C / 41°F can cause serious damage to young seedlings. After their first full winter they should be established enough to tolerate temperatures as low as -5°C / 23°F.

Once established they will require regular water and a bit extra when flowering.

Southern Magnolia Trees take 4-5 years to begin flowering.
