Growth

Malus sylvestris is fruiting, deciduous tree that grows to a maximum height of 10 metres (33 feet) and a maximum width of 8 metres (26 feet). The leaves of a European Crabapple are ovate, dark green and glossy with an asymmetrical leaf base. Leaf margins are curved and serrated while the hermaphrodite flowers start blooming in late spring, have five red/pink/white petals each.

Branches are thorny and can become more so in response to pruning or browsing. The wild fruit is no bigger than 4cm (under 2 inches) wide and is quite harsh and acidic to the taste.

In the right growing conditions, European Crabapples can take around 7 years to start producing flowers and fruit from seed.

FACTS ABOUT MALUS SYLVESTRIS (European Crabapple)

Malus sylvestris is one of the main sources of pectin which is used to make jam.

The wood of the tree makes excellent firewood while a yellow or red dye can be obtained from its bark.

Apparently, the fruit flavour improves considerably if harvested after it has been frosted. The fruit is more often used as a poultice. It’s crushed into a pulp and applied to inflammation and small flesh wounds.

HOW TO GROW MALUS SYLVESTRIS (European Crabapple)

Note: European Crabapple is one of the most challenging seeds to germinate. Due to their deep dormancy they require both warm and cold stratification.

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds for 24 hours in water. Then place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with moistened soil, soil should not be wet – if you can squeeze water out of the soil, it is too wet.

Write the date and place bag into a warm, dark place where temperatures can remain constant around 20°C/68°F for around two weeks. Many suggest the top of the refrigerator.

After 2 weeks, move the bag of seeds to inside the fridge where temperatures remain around 5°/41°.

Step 2

The bag of seeds will need to remain inside the fridge for around 12 weeks. After two weeks inside the fridge, check the bag every few days to ensure the soil is still moist and in case of any sprouts which should be sown immediately.

Step 3

After, sow each seed about 3mm deep into seed trays or small pots of garden soil. Moisten and then move into a well-lit position out of direct sunlight. Keep moist during entire germination process.

Average germination time from sowing is around 4-6 weeks in ideal conditions but can sometimes take until the following growing season. If seeds dry out at any stage they can return to their deep dormancy state and the whole process needs to start again.

Wait until any seedlings are at least one year old and the last frost has passed before transplanting. If in pots, you can leave them until they begin to become root bound or upsize every two-three years.

Step 4

The final position can be part-shade but European Crabapples will produce more foliage and fruit when in a location of full-sun.

Once established trees can tolerate severe cold and not require much watering until the warm weather begins.

European Crabapple trees can take between 7-10 years to reach maturity from seed.
