Marrubium vulgare is also known as Common Horehound and has been found in Roman literature as far back as the 1st century. There it was a herb used to treat respiratory issues and to rid livestock of parasites.

In modern medicine, it is an ingredient found in many throat lozenges and in Germany is considered a treatment for colds and indigestion. As a species, the plant can become invasive and has successfully spread to every continent except Antarctica.

Growth

Marrubium vulgare is a herbaceous perennial that grows to the humble size of about 60cm in height by 90cm in width. White Horehound succeeds in most soils that aren’t boggy, is tolerant of dry and poor soils and can withstand cold winters with heavy frosts. Plants prefer a warm, sunny position and can become invasive so growing in containers or garden beds is recommended.

The leaves are grey in colour, up to 5cm long with a crinkled surface and are covered in hairs. Flowers are borne on clusters on the upper part of the stem and are white in colour. Plants flourish where the soil contains plenty of nitrogen and make an excellent companion when grown near tomatoes. Known to assist tomatoes to produce longer and heavier harvests.

If pruned after the flowering period, the White Horehound will produce a second crop of leaves. Plants are harvested as they come into flower and can be used fresh or dried.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW MARRUBIUM VULGARE (White Horehound)

Step 1

A higher germination and a more predictable sprouting timetable can be achieved by preparing the seeds by cold stratification prior to sowing.

To start, soak the seeds for around one hour in clean water. Then add a small quantity of moistened soil into a small zip-lock plastic bag and then added the soaked seeds into the bag. Label the bag with a date and seed type and then place into the refrigerator for four weeks.

Once a week, check the soil hasn’t dried out and add moisture as required with a mist spray to any ensure soil remains moist, but not soggy. Sow any sprouts immediately.

After 4 weeks, take the seeds out of the bag and prepare the containers as explained in Step 2.

Step 2

Sow the White Horehound seeds by pressing them into the surface of pots/seed trays filled with a moist garden soil. Cover lightly as the seeds require some light to germinate.

The ideal temperature for germination is around 20°C / 68°F. A heat mat may be required if not growing during days when this temperature can be achieved.

Germination can take between 14-28 days.

Step 3

Once sprouts emerge, gradually increase their daily sunlight by first introducing them to the softer morning sun. Seedlings can be transplanted out or upgraded to larger pots when they are big enough to handle.

Any final position needs to be in full sun or part-sun. Due to their invasiveness White Horehound could be kept in pots or transplanted into garden beds where their spread can be contained.

Once established, plants can tolerate temperatures down to -10°C / 14°F as they go dormant over the Winter.

White Horehound doesn’t usually produce flowers until their second Spring season so maturity takes around 18-24 months.
