Growth

German Chamomile is an annual herbaceous plant that grows to a height of up to 60cm (24 inches) and requires around 30cm (12 inches) spacing. The species is a fast growing annual, that takes advantage of the brief warmer months of its cold native range. They like moist but well-draining soils that are poor in nutrients but do enjoy a fertiliser that is high in potassium.

German Chamomile grows long and narrow leaves that can be binpinnate or tripinnate and produce flowers with white ray florets with yellow disc florets. Flowering can occur 2-3 times per year depending on conditions, with the primary blooming period during early to mid-Summer.

HOW TO GROW MATRICARIA CHAMOMILLA (German Chamomile)

Step 1

Direct sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of a good quality soil mix. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Plants require 30cm spacing and as seeds are very small it can be difficult in windy conditions to sow sparingly.

The best location is a garden bed that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Moisten the soil lightly, avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to completely dry out.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 20-25°C / 68-77°F. Germination can take between 7-14 days.

Step 2

As seedlings emerge, it may be necessary to remove nearby weaker seedlings to allow the best to thrive.

If transplanting German Chamomile seedlings, they should be moved after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 20°C/68°F.

Step 3

Fertiliser may be applied diluted when seedlings have properly established and should be high in potassium.

German Chamomile takes around 65-80 days to start flowering. Harvest the flowers by pinching the stem just below the flower head. Flowers can be used fresh or dried.
