Growth

Medicago sativa is a perennial forage legume that grows to around 1 metre high (3 feet) and is a popular crop
used in feeding livestock. It is also grown as a sprouting vegetable where in as little as five days, one teaspoon of Alfalfa seeds can produce up to five cups of sprouts.

Perhaps the best use of Alfalfa is to grow the plants specifically for green manure. At any stage of the plant lifecycle the stems, leaves and roots can be chopped up and spread over the soil. This helps to improve the quantity of the nitrogen in the soil and is widely used in permaculture, backyard gardeners and in large commercial farming.

FACTS ABOUT MEDICAGO SATIVA (Alfalfa)

Alfalfa is the fourth most grown crop in the United States by land area and in 2009 around 30 million hectares was devoted to growing Alfalfa worldwide.

The Romans allocated a jugerum (about 60% of an acre) to Alfalfa which meant they could feed three
horses all-year round. Alfalfa is believed to have originated in a region of modern day Iran.

Sowing small quantities of Alfalfa seeds amongst the vegetable garden is an excellent way to rejuvenate the soil while still reaping the current seasons harvest.

HOW TO GROW MEDICAGO SATIVA (Alfalfa)

To grow edible Alfalfa shoots simply leave in water for about a week, changing the water every 12 hours.

Once sprouted they are ready to be eaten.

For growing the crop that can be used as Lucerne Hay or for the leaves for soil fixing follow the instructions below.

Step 1

Soak the seeds first in warm water
for around 12 hours or overnight.

The best time to start is early to
mid-spring but some farms will also
sow during autumn if winter temperatures
are warm enough to avoid frost.

Step 2

Sow seeds onto the surface of pots or ideally directly into their final position in pre-prepared ground.

Cover lightly and moisten until well soaked.

Ensure the position is where they will get plenty of sun.

It’s important to remove weeds to stop them competing against seedlings early on.

Seeds should germinate after 4-7 days.

Step 3

Additional watering is advised from when plants are flowering right up until harvest. Harvesting is ready when the outer seeds go hard. As a nitrogen fixer for the soil, Alfalfa can be chopped down at any period of the plants cycle.

Alfalfa takes around 75 days from seed to harvest.
