GROWTH:

The Melaleuca alterniflora grows to an average height of 7 metres (21 feet) and a width of 4 metres (12 feet). This evergreen tree has small, thin, green leaves which are alternatively arranged along its branches. The leaves average in size between 10-30 mm (0.4-1.4 inch) in length and 1-2 mm (0.04-0.075 inch) wide.
Flowers are present during Spring and early Summer and are white in colour.

Medicinal Tea Tree cannot grow in fully shaded locations, they are native to warmer climates and need full sun to part sun positions. This species can tolerate temperatures down to -7°C and while it grows in warmer temperate and tropical climates, it prefers the milder sub-tropical regions near rivers and swampy areas; where it has more access to water. Although some websites say this species is reasonably drought tolerant, we are yet to witness this. They may become more resistant as they age but we have personally found they do not like the soil completely drying out at all.

This species is a hermaphrodite, meaning that it has both male and female reproductive organs within the same flower and are self-fertile.

HOW TO GROW MELALEUCA ALTERNIFLORA (Medicinal Tea Tree)

NOTE: Soaking seeds in clean water for 18 hours prior to sowing has been shown to improve germination rates and times. When using this method, we found it easier to pour as much water as possible out of the container without losing seeds, and then to pinch a small amount between fingers to gently sprinkle the seeds through the seed tray.

Step 1

Surface sow seeds on fertile, well draining seed raising mix. A small layer of soil (1mm) can be sprinkled onto to hold the seeds into place.

Use a mist spray bottle or hose to soak the soil and place pots or tray in a warm location well-lit but shaded position or a morning sun/afternoon shade.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 20-30°C (68-86°F).

Step 2

It is extremely important for this species to keep the soil moist during germination. The seeds embryo, once activated can dry out and die fairly quickly.

If ideal temperatures are provided, germination will range between 7-20 days. Germination can be sporadic and take up to 4 weeks if ideal conditions are not supplied.

Step 3

Seedlings can be transplanted if necessary once they have 2-3 adult leaves. If the seedlings are coping well wait until they are a little bigger.

If living in cooler areas, we recommended seedlings to be either inside the house or kept in a greenhouse for their first couple of winters.

Step 4

Seedlings can be planted out once they are around 2 foot tall. This species prefers a full sun location but will cope well in some afternoon shade.

Once established, they will require more water during warmer climates. This species often found naturally in boggy areas and near rivers, so this is helpful to keep in mind in regards to their water requirements. Melaleuca alternifolia is flood tolerant.

Melaleuca alterniflora take around 3-5 years to fully mature.
