GROWTH:

Melaleuca pulchella grows to an average height of 3 metres (10 feet) and a width of 2 metres (7 feet). This Australian native is tolerant of a wide range of soils and moisture and grows well under Eucalyptus trees, in pots or as a decorative hedge. Established plants perform well when pruned early in the winter.

Claw Honey Myrtle leaves are ovate to elliptic in shape and are small, growing no larger than 6mm. Each branch contains many of the leaves which have large oil glands underneath. The flowering season starts in early Spring and can extend until well into the Autumn.  They range in colour from pink to mauve and occur either on their own or in groups of up to four. Each flower contains up to 100 stamens and are renowned for their ability to attract bees into the garden.

Flowering is followed by woody, urn-shaped fruit capsules that grow to around 6mm in length. The Claw Honey Myrtle usually takes between 3-5 years to reach full maturity.

HOW TO GROW MELALEUCA PULCHELLA (Claw Honey Myrtle)

NOTE: Soaking seeds in clean water for 18 hours prior to sowing has been shown to improve germination rates and times. When using this method, we found it easier to pour as much water as possible out of the container without losing seeds, and then to pinch a small amount between fingers to gently sprinkle the seeds through the seed tray.

Step 1

Surface sow seeds on fertile, well draining seed raising mix. A small layer of soil (1mm) can be sprinkled onto to hold the seeds into place.

Use a mist spray bottle or hose to soak the soil and place pots or tray in a warm location well-lit but shaded position or a morning sun/afternoon shade.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 20-30°C (68-86°F).

Step 2

It is extremely important for this species to keep the soil moist during germination. The seeds embryo, once activated can dry out and die fairly quickly.

If ideal temperatures are provided, germination will range between 7-20 days. Germination can be sporadic and take up to 4 weeks if ideal conditions are not supplied.

Step 3

Seedlings can be transplanted if necessary once they have 2-3 adult leaves. If the seedlings are coping well wait until they are a little bigger.

If living in cooler areas, we recommended seedlings to be either inside the house or kept in a greenhouse for their first couple of winters.

Step 4

Seedlings can be planted out once they are around 2 foot tall. This species prefers a full sun location but will cope well in some afternoon shade.

Once established, they will require more water during warmer periods.

Melaleuca pulchella can take around 3-5 years to fully mature.
