Mesembryanthemum crystallinum – Crystal Ice Plant

$5.00$7.00

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (Crystal Ice Plant) is a succulent herb plant that is native to Africa and Southern Europe. It gets its common name due to water storing cells that cover the plant, that give the Crystal Ice Plant a glistening, crystalised look. The plant is low growing (prostrate) and can cover a 1 metre area and has flowers similar to the Pig’s Face Plant, which it is related to.

It is an unusual plant that can be either annual, biennial or perennial dependent on the climate and conditions it is grown in. The leaves and stems of this species are edible raw or cooked and have acidic, slightly salty taste.

Growth

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum grows as a groundcover to approximately 10-15 cm’s tall, with a spread of ½-1 metre. This species grows happily in poor soils as long as they drain well, including salty soils and clay soils, it is also drought tolerant. The flowers appear in Spring to Early Summer, are white, range from 3-5 cm’s in diameter and have thin, string like petals. Flowers open in the morning and close again at night. Not frost tolerant and will die off once cold temperatures get close.

The Crystal Ice Plant needs some moisture while it is young, but very little to none as an adult plant. Prune as required to keep it neat and tidy.

FACTS ABOUT MERSEMBRYANTHEMUM CRYSTALLINUM (Crystal Ice Plant)

The leaves of the Crystal Ice Plant can be crushed and used as a soap substitute.

The plant absorbs and stores salt into its roots, shoots and bladder cells. Once the plant dies it releases the salt back into the ground via a process called ‘leaching’, this prevents many other plants from growing in this area, leaving it free for its own seed, which is not bothered by the salt to germinate.

This species will accelerate itself span to seed producing when stressed.

HOW TO GROW MERSEMBRYANTHEMUM CRYSTALLINUM (Crystal Ice Plant)

Step 1
Prepare a tray or pot/s with either a fresh, unused well draining 50/50 sand soil mix or a succulent mix. Perlite can be used/added, as can peat moss.

Step 2
The seeds of this species are tiny, so sowing them evenly is difficult. We usually sprinkle them onto the top of the soil, spreading them out as best we can.

Surface sow the seeds and then sprinkle a very thin layer of further soil mix on top – no more than 1 mm, as these seeds need light to germinate.
Use a mist spray bottle to moisten the soil, to avoid disturbing the seeds.

Step 3
Place the tray or pot/s into a warm area that gets lots of light, without direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist at all times during germination using a mist spray bottle, but never wet.
This species is prone to dampening off as seedlings.

Ideal germination temperatures are 18-22°C / 64-72°F

Germination will begin in ideal conditions between 2-4 weeks

Step 4

Germination can be sporadic, some seeds germinating early within days and often others taking 4-6 weeks – so do not give up on any slow ones. This is due to natural survival instinct that causes the seeds at the base of seed pod to stay dormant, while ones at the top are ready to germinate in acceptable conditions.

Seedlings can be transplanted once they are 2-3 cm’s tall.

Step 5
When ready for outdoor planting, which can be done from small seedling size, they need a full sun position and well draining soil. Water in once transplanted.

As an adult plant, which can sometimes take as little as 8-12 weeks, they will have absorbed water and salt enough to keep them alive and will need little to no water from this point.

This species is grown as an annul in cooler climates and is not frost tolerant. It will start to struggle at temperatures as low at 10°C / 50°F.

Crystal Ice Plant can take as little as 12 weeks to begin flowering in some situations, especially if under stress.
