Growth

Nandina domestica is an evergreen shrub that grows to a compact height of 2 metres (7 feet) and a width of around 1.5 metres (5 feet) though it is often grown in a row to complete a hedge formation. Sacred Bamboo is tolerant of poor soils, low water and cold temperatures and yet still provides year-round ornamental red foliage.

The leaves can grow as a deciduous plant if temperatures become too cold (lower than −22°C /−10 °F) which rarely occurs anywhere in Australia. Not only does Sacred Bamboo tolerate cold temperatures but it also handles extremely hot conditions, making it a popular hedge all around Australia.

Sacred Bamboo plants can take around 5-7 years to reach full maturity.

HOW TO GROW NANDINA DOMESTICA (Sacred Bamboo)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds in fresh water for 24 hours, refreshing the water after 12 hours to avoid bacteria growth.

Step 2

Then sow each seed 2mm deep in seed trays or small pots filled with a seed raising mix that drains well. Moisten with a spray bottle to avoid over watering and then move into a well-lit position that is not in direct sunlight. A well-lit location is important but be careful to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out.

The optimal temperature for the germination period is between 10-20°C/50-70°F and should take between 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Once seedlings are looking strong, they can be moved to a sunnier location but be careful doing this in warmer months. If you need to do this, do it gradually so that seedlings have the time to adjust.

Seedlings can be transplanted once they reach 10cm or 4 inches in height into a good quality, nutrient rich soil. A position in full sun is preferred.

Once established, Sacred Bamboo plants won’t require regular watering and can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C / 14°F.

Sacred Bamboo takes around 5-7 years to reach maturity.
