Growth

Nelumbo nucifera is a flowering perennial that grows in water and reaches heights of up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) and 1.2 metres (4 feet) wide. Though noted as a sub-tropical plant that requires warm temperatures, its wild habitats include the Amur region of Russia, the base of the Himalayas and at heights of around 1,300 metres (4,500 feet).

However, the germination and early development of Sacred Lotus plants occurs much better in daytime temperatures that regularly reach 25°C / 77°F.

Nelumbo nucifera naturally grows in water up to 2.5 metres (8 feet) deep with a minimum depth of 30cm (1 foot). In cooler climates, deeper water provides more protection to the sensitive tubers. Sacred Lotus also prefers a loamy, clay soil that is rich nutrients and a location that provides plenty of sunlight.

HOW TO GROW NUCIFERA NELUMBO (Sacred Lotus)

Step 1

Start by locating the less pointy end of the seed, this side generally has a tiny dimple – a bit like a little belly button. Then scratch the dimpled end of the seed/s with sandpaper, a file or by lightly scraping them against some concrete. Do this slowly until you get a tiny glimpse of cream coloured seed inside the hard outer shell … DO NOT go any further as you could damage the seed or embryo and introduce bacteria.

Step 2

At this point soak the seeds in lukewarm water overnight or for at least 6 hours.

Step 3

In a 25cm (10 inches) deep bucket fill the bottom with 5cm (2 inches) of garden soil. Gently fill with water to 10cm (4 inches) above the soil level and leave in the sun to settle.

Encase each soaked seed separately in a ball of silty mud and then gently settle each ball of mud down into the soil, alternatively push the seed into the soil a little to hold it in place. Cover the bucket with plastic and leave in a sunny position.

Keeping the bucket at a temperature around 20°C/68°F will improve germination rates.

Sprouting should occur within 10-14 days.

Step 4

At the two leaves stage, plants should be transplanted into their own containers and provided additional water as required to allow enough room to grow. Do not fill the water above the leaves, fill to a point where they are floating on top as they should.

Step 5

Once established, fertilise with a combination of diluted chicken manure or blood and bone.

Transfer seedlings to the pond or final position once the temperature has reached 10°C/50°F and there is no chance of frost. Allow about 1 metre (3 feet) spacing between plants.

Sacred Lotus can begin flowering during their second growing season so it can take between 12-18 months.
