Nepeta racemosa is also sometimes referred to as Dwarf Catnip or Raceme Catnip and is commonly grown in garden beds, a border plant or as a groundcover. The beauty of the plant as an ornamental has prompted it to be awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

The whole genus of Nepeta plants are known to have a nirvana-like effect on some domestic cats due to the chemical nepetalactone which has the added bonus of repelling mosquitos.

Growth

Nepeta racemosa is a small herbaceous perennial that only grows to around 30cm (12 inches) high and about 40cm (16 inches) wide. Persian Catmint enjoys warm, sunny conditions and soil that drains well. It is not frost tolerant and will regress at temperatures under 5°C/41°F.

Once established, plants don’t require much maintenance and produce beautiful violet, lavender coloured flowers from late Spring right through to Autumn. The flowers attract both bees and butterflies.

As a companion plant the aromatic leaves of the Persian Catmint does well to repel lots of nasty pests and is beneficial when planted near roses, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens.

HOW TO GROW NEPETA RACEMOSA (Persian Catmint)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal but not necessary as Persian Catmint tolerates a wide variety of soil types.

Cover the seeds very lightly so that they remain exposed to some sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 21-27°C / 70-80°F. Germination can take between 14-21 days.

Step 2

It is recommended to grow Persian Catmint seedlings in pots for their first twelve months if in temperate climates so that they can be moved to avoid exposure to cold temperatures.

When transplanting into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 20°C/68°F.

During the plants first winter, take measures to protect them from any frost.

Step 3

The final position should be in full sun. Due to their small height, aim to plant them as border or spaced enough to ensure taller plants don’t steal their sunlight.

Once established, plants can tolerate drought but can become stressed if temperatures colder drop below 5°C/41°F.

Persian Catmint is ready to start harvesting from between 90-120 days.
