FACTS ABOUT PINUS DENSIFLORA (Japanese Red Pine)
Pinus densiflora is used extensively as a reforestation tree for its strong wind resistance and ability to grow in sandy or disturbed soils.
Young catkins, seeds and the inner bark of the tree can be eaten but as an emergency food only.
The timber of Japanese Red Pine is also resistant to mold, corrosion and mildew and is used for electric poles, sleepers and furniture. A resin can be derived from the tree which can be used to make rosin, a substance used by violinists on their bows and for sealing waxes and varnishes.
The resin is also used in traditional medicines as a treatment for coughs, colds, wounds, skin complaints and kidney issues.
