Growth

Portulaca oleracea is a herbaceous succulent that reaches the small height of up to 40cm (16 inches) and a width of 30cm (12 inches). Green Purslane is grown as an annual in colder climates as it does not tolerate frost, but is perennial in Tropical regions. They enjoy consistently moist soils and will grow fast when watered regularly and provided full sunshine.

In areas with high rainfall, flowers can appear year round and open only during sunny mornings. A taproot with fibrous secondary roots allow the species to tolerate poor soils and some dry spells but generally requires regular watering to keep leaves in good condition.

Green Purslane plants begin to flower in around 6-9 months but the young leaves can start being harvested in just 6-8 weeks and then anytime onwards before the plant flowers.

HOW TO GROW PORTULACA OLERACEA (Green Purslane)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal. Cover very lightly so the seeds are exposed to sunlight as it is necessary for them to germinate.

To increase germination rate, soak the seeds in water of room temperature for 30 minutes prior to sowing.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-25°C/62-77°F. Germination can take between 10-14 days.

Step 2

Once sprouting occurs, move seedlings to a location that receives the morning sunlight and keep the soil moist.

Seedlings are ready for transplanting when they reach around 10cm (4 inches) in height.

Step 3

When transplanting into garden beds or directly into the ground, wait until after the last frost and when daytime temperatures consistently reach a minimum of 10°C/50°F.

The final position should be in full sun as flowers will not open without direct sunlight.

Once established, plants can tolerate cold temperatures down to -5°C/41°F, but will require regular water to keep their soil moist.

The young leaves of Green Purslane can be ready to harvest in around 6-8 weeks and be flowering within 6-9 months depending on conditions.
