Growth

Ptilotus exaltatus is a short-lived perennial or annual herbaceous native that grows to a height of around 1.2 metres (4 feet) but can reach 1.5 metres (5 feet). Pink Mulla Mulla is a fast-growing flower that requires very little watering. It is recommended to only water lightly and only when the soil has completely dried out.

One of the main features is that they flower during Winter, from Autumn through to Spring. The flowers are generally pink or purple with conical heads up to 10cm (4 inches) high. Leaves are leathery green, almost blue in colour and cover the stem until flowers begin to emerge.

In ideal conditions, flowering can occur in around 150 days from sowing.

FACTS ABOUT PTILOTUS EXALTATUS (Pink Mulla Mulla)

Ptilotus exaltatus was first observed and described in 1810  and comprehensively catalogued in 1971. The genus name Ptilotus comes from the Greek ‘ptilotos’ meaning feathery or winged.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW PTILOTUS EXALTATUS
(Pink Mulla Mulla)

 

NOTE: This species is responsive to smoke treatment, although it is not necessary it can speed up and improve germination.

Step 1

Fill tray or small pots with a well-draining seed raising mix or native flower soil mix. Sow 1 cm deep and space approximately 1 inch apart. Moisten with a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the seeds. Place into a warm, shaded or part shaded position and keep moist but not wet!

Ideal temperature for germination is between 20-25°C / 68-77°F.

Seeds will germinate between 10-21 days in the correct conditions.

Step 2

Seedlings can be transplanted if needed when they reach once around 10cms (4 inches) in height. When transplanting try to use a native flower soil mix or other well-draining soil mix (add propagating sand if needed to improve drainage).

Step 3

Final location should be full sun, plant out in spring once the weather warms up.

Pink Mulla Mulla is suitable for keeping in pots but are more often grown around garden edges.

Pink Mulla Mulla can be ready to harvest in around 150 days.

If needing to use a fertiliser, preferably use one for native plants which are low in phosphorus.
