There are only two farms, both in Victoria that we know of that produce an annual supply of the European Gooseberry. And we now know three of the children in our family when at the age of two much prefer eating a fresh Gooseberry. After harvesting and tasting Blueberry, Raspberry, Blackberry and European Gooseberries in one day, the Gooseberry was by far their favourite and was the first bucket to be eaten.

Growth

Ribes uva-crispa is a deciduous shrub that grows to a compact height of up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) by 1 metre (3 feet) and can tolerate a wide range of climatic conditions. European Gooseberries also cope with a large temperature range, with dormant plants withstanding -20°C/-4°F in winter and up to 30°C/86°F in summer.

Plants enjoy are regular source of moisture but do not enjoy being waterlogged. They enjoy a fertiliser that is high in potash and if applied during the flowering springtime will produce more fruit in summer. Although Gooseberry plants are tolerant of shade and young plants benefit from the protection of harsh sunlight, the final position should be in full sun where berry production is at its peak.

Growing from seed, Ribes uva-crispa can take between 3-4 years to start fruiting.

FACTS ABOUT RIBES UVA-CRISPA (European Gooseberry)

In Britain, Gooseberries are sometimes called goosegogs and are often found at old runs and abandoned castles which has made it difficult to determine whether they are native to the region.

A colloquial phrase suggesting that ‘babies are born under a gooseberry bush’ was part in reference to a 19th century term where Gooseberry bush was slang for pubic hair.

Gooseberries are called groseille a maquereau in France which translates to mackerel berries as the berries are part of a sauce served with mackerel.

Rich in Vitamin C, magnesium and potassium, the Gooseberry has a variety of medicinal benefits which you can click here to view more.

HOW TO GROW RIBES UVA-CRISPA (European Gooseberry)

NOTE
: European Gooseberry plants will rarely fruit in Tropical gardens and are recommended for Cold and Temperate climates but can also succeed in Dry and Sub-Tropical conditions.

Step 1

Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with damp peat moss (not wet), write the date and place bag into the fridge for 12 weeks.

Check them weekly to make sure that the medium is still moist and if not use a spray bottle to re-moisten. Also check for any sprouts; if any have sprouted – take them out and plant them as per step 2, leaving the non-sprouted seeds in the fridge.

Step 2

After 12 weeks, fill pots or seed trays with well draining soil, a fruit compost mix is ideal.

Place the seeds gently on the surface and lightly cover with more soil. European Gooseberry seeds do not need light to germinate.

Water with a spray bottle to avoid over watering and then move into a warm, part sun position.

Optimal temperature for germination is 15-20°C/60-70°F. A heat mat may be necessary if you cannot provide these temperatures. You can also cover tray with plastic wrap to keep warmth and moisture inside the tray.

Seeds should start to germinate between 6-8 weeks and can be sporadic, so don’t give up on any that haven’t sprouted until after 12 weeks!

Step 3

Once sprouted, move tray to sunny position.

Transplant seedlings when at least one year old and at least 10-15cm ( 4-6inches) in height.

Keep in a small-medium pot until after first winter.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after last frost. When planting out allow 50cm (2 feet) of space around and in between them.

Once established, will survive severe cold. Additional water advised when fruiting.

European Gooseberries can take between 3-4 years to begin fruiting.
