Sansevieria hyacinthoides is native to tropical Africa and Southern Asia, however tolerates cooler temperatures down to 5°C but does not appreciate frost. Thus species can be grown indoors in colder regions.

Growth

The Snake Plant can grow quite quickly in the right environment. Being a naturally tropical plant it prefers some humidity but does not seem to tolerate wet boggy soil, in fact this plant seem to be much happier in drier soils. Sansevieria is quite drought tolerant once established. If planting out into an area with high rainfall, it is best to plant it up a little higher in the garden to avoid root rot. A full sun to shaded spot is fine but these plants seem to be healthiest in filtered light/dappled shade locations.

Sansevieria hyacinthoides beautiful thick, sword like leaves can grow as tall as 50 cm’s (20 inches), the plant can spread to 12-25 cm’s (5-10 inches) wide. The leaves of this species are somewhat patterned with both dark and very light green. Although they can appear blotchy in their patterns up close, they can look striped from a distance.

When the plants are growing well they will send out fresh shoots from under the ground, starting a whole new plant which can be divided/separated off and re-potted elsewhere. So, if you look after this plant well, you may not ever need to buy another.

FACTS ABOUT SANSEVIERIA HYACINTHOIDES (Snake Plant)

Sansevieria leaves were traditionally used in Africa for their fibre, which was used to make ropes, fishing lines and baskets. More recently studies are been performed to evaluate the strength & low density due to its apparent renewability and abundant availability.

The leaves of Sansevieria were used as bandages in traditional medicine. The plant is reported to have antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. Keep in mind though, that this plant can cause mil toxicity if ingested.

HOW TO GROW SANSEVIERIA HYACINTHOIDES (Snake Plant)

Note: Sansevieria seeds can take a a few months to germinate, during this time fairly consistent warmth and humidity is required. Ideal germination temperatures are between 22-28°C / 72-83°F.

Step 1

Soak the seeds in water of room temperature for at least an hour, not longer than 24 hours.

Step 2

Prepare a well draining soil mixture, this can be a cactus mix, a sand/soil mix or a mixture with perlite &/or vermiculite. The most important thing is for the soil to not remain wet and boggy as this will rot the seeds.

Step 3

Remove the seeds from the water they were soaking in and place them on the surface of the prepared soil mix. Gently push the seeds into the soil, so that they are still visible but just below the surface. Once this is done, cover them with a light sprinkling of left over soil. Sansevieria prefers light to germinate.

Use a mist spray bottle or mist hose to gently water the soil. The soil must be moist, not soaking wet, so leave in a warm place to dry out slightly before following the next steps if necessary.

Step 4

Sansevieria needs warmth and humidity to germinate. If you live in a tropical or sub-tropical region this shouldn’t be too much of an issue at most times of the year, but in temperate and cooler climates a greenhouse may be necessary, or the pot/tray can be covered with plastic kitchen wrap (glad wrap), a clear plastic bag or freezer bag – this will create a moist, humid greenhouse environment.

Ideal germination temperatures are between 22-28°C / 72-83°F. If these temperatures can not be provided naturally a heat mat will be needed.

Step 5

Germination is sporadic in this species. In prime conditions you may see germination in as little as 3-4 weeks but more often than not it can take up to 12 weeks.

Continue to keep the soil moist but never wet after germination. You are better off letting the soil dry out a bit than to over water this species.

If using glad wrap, you may have to remove this as the little seedlings start to press against it. You can change to a clear plastic bag at this stage and use stakes/sticks to hold the plastic bag in an upright position to keep it out of the way of the growing seedling, while maintaining humidity.

Sansevieria can be transplanted once they are big enough to easily handle, if necessary.
