Growth

Strelitzia reginae is a flowering evergreen tree that grows to a maximum height of 2 metres (8 feet) and a width of around 1.2 metres (4 feet). The Bird of Paradise grows in a wide variety of soils and is moderately drought-tolerant and is easy to maintain once established.

However, they do require full sunlight, and the young seedlings are not frost tolerant. They will need protection throughout their first full growing season. After their first winter and the Bird of Paradise plants are well established they are tolerant to lower temperatures down to 0°C / 32°F.

Many are grown successfully indoors when positioned near a window where they can receive plenty of sunlight.

The flowers resemble a birds’ head, are a contrasting black and orange which takes around 3-5 years to grow from seed. While many texts regarding the Bird of Paradise suggest they are intolerant to cold temperatures, we ourselves have multiple specimens that have lived through winters where the temperatures regularly drop below 0°C / 32°F.

HOW TO GROW STRELITZIA REGINAE (Bird of Paradise)

Step 1

Start by soaking the seeds in warm water for 48 hours, changing the water every 12 hours to avoid bacteria growth. To improve germination percentage try nicking the seeds with a knife or scratching them slightly on concrete or with sandpaper prior to soaking.

Step 2

After soaking, sow the seeds about 5mm deep in small pots of a nutrient-rich and well-draining soil. Moisten lightly and cover with plastic film or leave in a location where the temperature can remain steady at between 20-25°C / 68-77°F. A heat mat may be required.

Check every few days to ensure that the soil hasn’t dried out and use a misting spray to apply moisture evenly and to avoid unsettling the seed/s.

Bird of Paradise seeds usually germinate in between 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Once seedlings appear remove plastic and/or move them into a location where they will get consistent sunlight.

Keep them protected until after their first winter. Once established, plants won’t require much water, should tolerate mild frosts but will require at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.

Bird of Paradise plants can begin flowering from seed in between 3-5 years.
