The Japanese Maple ( Acer palmatum atropurpureum ) is one of the most well known trees in the world. This deciduous species truly is a spectacular ornamental tree. With its stunning red foliage in spring, it is a real showstopper. Although the Japanese have been blessed with having this beautiful tree named after their country, it is actually a native to China, Russia, Mongolia and Korea as well. Another common name for the Acer palmatum is the Palmate Maple.

Growth

The Acer palmatum grows to an average height and width of 6-10 metres and the canopy is dome shaped. The leaves are palmate and start out bright green in spring but turn orange and then a deep red in Autumn. The leaves range in size depending on maturity from 3-12 cm’s and drop in winter while the tree is dormant.

Japanese Maples grow naturally as an understory plant, so prefer a partly shaded location. They are native to cooler climates so do not tolerate very hot afternoon sun and winds well, this can cause leaf burn. While young it is best to protect them from strong winds. They are most suited for cool & temperate climates, however, are successfully grown in both sub-tropical and hot, dry areas as long as they get plenty of shade and water during warmer times of the year.

HOW TO GROW ACER PALMATUM -ATROPURPUREUM (Japanese Maple)

Step 1

Place the seeds into a container and pour pre boiled water that is cooled enough to touch over them and leave for 24 hours.

Step 2

Drain the water and put the seeds into a plastic zip-lock bag along with a small mixture of either moist garden soil & sand or vermiculite. Mixture should not be wet, if you can squeeze water out of it, then it is too wet.

Seal the bag, date it, and put the bag into the crisper section refrigerator for 12 weeks. Check every couple of weeks that the mixture is still moist, do not let it dry out. Also check for any sprouting seeds (it can occasionally happen) any that may have sprouted, remove and plant as per step 3.

Step 3

After 3 months, plant the seeds into small pots or a tray of a well-draining seed raising mix and cover with roughly 1cm of soil.

Water thoroughly and keep moist, but never wet for the entire germination process. Place in a warm, shaded location protected from where birds may steal your seeds.

Ideal temperatures for germination are between 16-22°C/60-72°F.

Germination should take around 3-4 weeks.

Step 4

Once sprouted, seedlings can be moved to a morning sun location, but do this gradually a few hours at a time over a week or two, to prevent shock.

During summer in warmer regions, they will be best left in a well-lit spot away from direct sun until they are more mature.

Keep in a pot until after first winter at least.

Step 5

Transplant into final position once the tree is strong enough but wait until the last frosts of winter have passed. The final position should be appropriate to your climate zone. In cold and cool temperate areas a full sun location will be fine, however warmer temperate regions will need some shade, preferably afternoon shade. For anyone attempting to grow these in hot areas, it will be important that they get quite a lot of shade, dappled shade from a larger tree is fine.

The roots of Japanese Maple are small so there is generally no threat of damage to underground water pipes etc.

Once established, will cope with frost in winter if well mulched.

Japanese Maples takes between 10-15 years to fully mature.
