The Red Maple ( Acer rubrum ) is one of the faster growing species of Maple. It is a deciduous tree native to North Americas and Canada. Although it can survive in temperatures down to a freezing -40°C, it can be grown in warmer climates and can be found naturally as south as Florida in America. Named and best known for its flaming red leaves in autumn, it is a popular choice as an ornamental feature tree in parks and private gardens and also as a shade tree or bonsai.

The Red Maple has quite a few common names including Canadian Red Maple, Water Maple, Swamp Maple, Soft Maple, Drummond Red Maple, Carolina Red Maple and Scarlet Maple.

Growth

The Acer Rubrum grows to an average of 20-30 metres tall with a width of 3-4 metres. The leaf is palmate and generally have 3 lobes, however, can have 5 but the extra two are usually much smaller and found at the base of the leaf. In early spring once Acer rubrum reaches maturity a display of small pink-red flowers will be seen prior to leaf development. Once the new leaves emerge, they are smooth and green on top but silvery and slightly furry underneath, as autumn arrives, they will turn orange and then their brilliant scarlet red.

HOW TO GROW ACER RUBRUM (Red Maple)

Step 1

Place the seeds into a container and pour pre-boiled, still hot but cooled enough to touch water over them and leave for 24 hours.

Drain the water and put the seeds into a plastic zip-lock bag along with a small amount of moist garden soil or moist vermiculite. Seal the bag, date it, and put the bag into the refrigerator for 4 weeks.

Step 2

After 4 weeks plant the seeds into small pots or a tray of well-draining soil and cover lightly with 2-3mm soil or vermiculite. Soil should be slightly acidic-neutral, alkaline soils will result in weak growing seedlings.

Water thoroughly and keep moist during the entire germination period. Keep in a warm, light – partially shaded area away from direct sun. Ideal temperatures for germination are 16-22°C/60-72°F.

Germination should around 4 weeks. In nature the seeds of this species can germinate sporadically and some will stay dormant until the following year – if you are patient and have the space, continuing to care for any that did not sprout, may yield some results the next year.

Step 3

Continue with the same conditions once sprouted, they can be gradually moved into a part sun position as they get a little stronger – do this slowly over a week or so. If the weather is warm in your area, do not allow the soil to completely dry out.

If transplanting is necessary, this can be done once the seedling has two true leaves.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after winter frosts have passed and your seedling or small tree is strong enough.

Once established, will cope with extreme cold but not with extreme heat. In cold regions a full sun location will be appreciated but in warmer climates, shade from the afternoon sun will be needed and regular watering during the warmer months.

Red Maples take between 50-70 years to fully mature.
