Actinidia chinensis – Golden Kiwi (Organic)

$4.00$7.00

The Golden Kiwi is native to China and is a deciduous, climbing vine. It can reach lengths of 9 metres and will produce fruit vigorously in the right location. The fruit has golden flesh unlike the more common kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) and has a little bit more of a tropical taste and is full of health beneficial nutrients.

This species can be grown from cold to sub-tropical climates with the right care and is suitable for container growing, although it needs something to climb up.

The Golden Kiwifruit ( Actinidia chinensis ) is a deciduous climbing vine that produces the Golden Kiwi. As its name suggests the flesh is a golden yellow colour, unlike most other kiwi varieties that generally have bright green flesh. Actinidia chinensis is native to China and is a little bit sweeter than the common green variety, Actinidia deliciosa.

Other common names for the Golden Kiwi are Chinese Gooseberry and Ichang Gooseberry. All kiwifruit varieties are highly nutritious and full of antioxidants, phytonutrients and vitamin C. Eating kiwifruit is said to help with asthma, protect the heart and colon, maintain blood glucose levels, reduce the risk of blood clots and aid with macular degeneration. The leaves of this plant are also edible.

Growth

Actinidia chinensis is a fast growing, climbing vine that can reach lengths of up to 9 metres. Kiwi is best grown over an arbor, up trellis, fences, or walls. It prefers a full sun location (a spot with at least hours of sunlight per day) and will fruit more vigorously in full sun conditions. It is cold hardy to 15°C and can be grown in cooler to subtropical zones. This species may need some pruning and maintenance to keep it neat and under control, however, please note that fruit grows on second year growth, so don’t prune back too hard. Pruning in winter, while the plant is dormant.

HOW TO GROW ACTINIDIA CHINENSIS (Golden Kiwifruit)

Step 1

Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with a small amount of moistened peat moss, squeeze excess moisture out. Write the date on the bag and place bag into the fridge for 12 weeks. Check weekly to make sure the peat is not drying out and re-moisten if necessary.

Step 2

After 12 weeks, sow each seed about 2 mm deep into seed trays of moistened peat moss and place into a well-lit location that is protected from direct sunlight. Keep moist during entire germination process.

Ideal germination temperatures for germination are 16-22°C/60-72°F.

Seeds should germinate after 4-6 weeks.

Step 3

Seedlings can be transplanted if necessary once they have at least 2 true leaves otherwise you can wait until they are 10-15 cm in height.

Keep in a pot until while young until after first winter has passed.

Step 4

Once first winter and any chance of frosts have passed, your plant can be transplanted into its final position. A location with full sun (at least 6-8 hours a day) will provide the most vigorous fruiting, extra watering will be required during this time.

Once established, will survive frost and cold.

Kiwi Plants can take between 2-3 years to begin fruiting.
