The Green Kiwifruit is a deciduous climbing vine. This green fuzzy species is the one we most commonly see at the supermarket. The fruit is the national fruit of China, the country to which it is native. The plant is quite fast growing and is great to grow as a feature plant over the top of an arbour or similar.

Suitable for cold to sub-tropical climates, it prefers full sun and will provide fruit once mature for around 50 years. Both male and female plants are needed for fruit to be produced.

The Actinidia deliciosa ( Green Kiwifruit ) is a deciduous climbing vine. This green fuzzy species is the one we most commonly see at the supermarket. The fruit is the national fruit of China, the country to which it is native. The fruit was named by a New Zealand company after their national bird, the ‘kiwi’. Apparently because it is furry and brown, like the bird.

New Zealand’s kiwi fruit industry began in 1904 when a school teacher, Isabel Fraser who was visiting China, brought back some seeds that were grown. From this humble beginning the NZ became the biggest producer of fruit and plants of the kiwi fruit until 2006. The most cultivated variety in the world, the ‘Hayward’ was developed in New Zealand.

Growth

Actinidia deliciosa is quite a fast-growing vine and is great for growing over structures like an arbor or up some trellis. It averages around 5-9 metres in growth but if left can cover larger areas over time. It has small fragrant flowers and plants are dioecious, meaning both male and female plants are separate. Both sexes are needed within approximately a 10-metre radius of each other for fruiting to occur. The plants gender is unknown until the plants begin to flower. One male plant can pollinate up to 8 females. The fruits flesh is bright green and tasty and grows to around 6 cm in length.

HOW TO GROW ACTINIDIA DELICIOSA (Green Kiwi Fruit)

Step 1

Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with a small amount of moistened (not wet) peat moss. Write the date and place bag into the fridge for 12 weeks.

Check every week or so to be sure that the peat is not drying out and re moisten if it is. If the zip lock bag seals well this should not be too much of an issue.

Step 2

After 12 weeks, sow each seed about 2 mm into seed trays or pots of peat moss or a well-draining seed starting mix.

Moisten and then move into a well-lit location out of direct sunlight. Keep moist during entire germination period but not wet as seeds can rot / mould in boggy wet soil.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 16-22°C/60-72°F.

Seeds begin to germinate around 3-4 weeks in good conditions.

Step 3

Transplant seedlings when 10-15cm in height. If needed, they can be transplanted as soon as they have 2 true adult leaves.

Once seedlings are thriving, they can slowly start to be moved out into a full sun position, do this a hour or so at a time in morning sun, extending the sun period every couple of days – as long as the seedlings are coping fine. This will help adjust them to the outdoor environment, doing this too quickly can send them into shock or cause severe leaf burn.

Step 4

Keep in a pot until after their winter and frosts have passed before planting out into their final position. final position should preferably be in full sun where they will produce the most fruit, however they will survive in part shade.

Once established, will survive cold weather and frosts.

Additional water advised is when fruiting.

Kiwi Plants can take between 3-5 years to begin fruiting.
