Andrographis paniculata has been heavily researched by scientists in recent years due to its reported medicinal qualities. Most of the findings so far have been positive but further investigation is required into the safety of this species due to some potential side effects, which include abortions in pregnant women.

Some other common names for the King of Bitters are Green Chiretta, Indian Echinacea, Creat, Neemba, Kirayat and Bhuin.

Growth

Andrographis paniculata grows approximately 30-80 cm’s tall and 12-30 cm’s wide and bears thin green leaves that stretch to around 8 cm’s in length. The beautiful white flowers are similar to those found on rare orchids. The King of Bitters flower has 4 petals that are mostly white but have some burgundy-coloured stripes and patterns on the upper petals.

The plant prefers a sunny location, and it takes around 3-4 months to reach harvest from seed. The King of Bitters is not recommended for gardeners in cold climates because it does not tolerate temperatures below 12°C.

HOW TO GROW ANDROGRAPHIS PANICULATA (King of Bitters)

NOTE: If growing in cooler temperate regions, start indoors and do not plant out until the weather is warmer and nighttime temperatures rarely go below 12°C / 54°F

Step 1

Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours prior to sowing.

Dry the seeds off with some paper towel or similar and using a good seed raising mix, sow seeds approximately 2 mm into small pots or a seedling tray.

Moisten and leave in well-lit position avoiding full afternoon sun that will dry out the soil. A greenhouse is suitable for starting this species or covering the pots with plastic/glad wrap.

Ideal temperature for peak germination rates is 25°C / 77°F

Step 2

Keep moist with regular misting and try not to let the soil dry out.

Seeds should begin germinating in ideal conditions after 1-2 weeks.

Step 3

Final position should be in full sun but is happy in some afternoon shade.

Transplant seedlings once they are around 6 weeks old. Space seedlings roughly 15 cm’s / ½ foot apart, in rows 30 cm / 1 foot apart.

King of Bitters takes roughly 3-4 months to mature.
