The grain from this species is rich in nutrition, containing amino acids including lysine which is used to treat cold sores and up to 19% protein, traits that are not common to cereal grains. Amaranth grain is becoming a popular product in health food stores for these reasons.

Amaranthus cruentus has several other common names which include Purple Amaranth, Prince’s Feather, Mexican Grain Amaranth, Red Amaranth, and Blood Amaranth.

Growth

Red Cathedral Amaranthus is a fast growing annual that can reach up to 2 metres tall and 1.2 metres wide in 4-5 months. This species best planted towards the back of garden beds to avoid it stealing sunlight from some of the lower growing plants. Leaves can be harvested continuously from as early as 30 days and the grain is ready when seed begins to fall off the seed head. Flowers are large and dark pink – burgundy in colour. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND growing this species organically.

This species is not frost tolerant and will die off as the weather cools to 4°C or lower.

HOW TO GROW AMARANTHUS CRUENTUS (Red Cathedral Amaranth)

NOTE: We recommend growing Amaranthus organically.

Step 1

In cooler climates, these can be started indoors for longer harvest times.

Sow directly into ground or into small pots of well-draining soil for transplanting later. Cover lightly, moisten, and leave moist in a bright sunny location. Keep the soil moist at all times during the germination process.

If starting early in cooler regions begin indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost.

Step 2

Ideal temperatures for seed germination are between 20-25°C/70-80°F, low germination will occur if the temperatures are much cooler.

Seeds should begin germinating at around 1-2 weeks.

Step 3

When transplanting into the garden, space seedlings roughly 30-45 cm’s apart. Don’t over water during transplanting.

Step 4

Final position should be full sun position protected from strong winds if possible – may require staking as they grow taller otherwise.

Amaranth takes roughly 150 days to flower.

The Seed Vine is currently on Holiday.
