The Utah Celery ( Apium graveolens var. Dulce ) is an open pollinated, heirloom, Non GMO variety originally from the Mediterranean and has been grown since 1953. Utah Celery is a stringless variety with great taste, nice thick crispy stalks and a tightly folded heart, it is a popular choice for its reliability and its resistance to disease.

Every part of celery can be eaten, and they are packed with nutrition & health benefits. It is high in vitamins A, B, D & K, folate, magnesium, phosphorus. calcium, potassium, riboflavin, and manganese. Celery is also a good source of dietary fibre and is low in saturated fats and cholesterol.

Growth

Utah Celery is a biennial herbaceous plant that grows to approximately 60-75 cm’s in height. They prefer nutrient rich, well composted soil. For best growth fertilise well and the soil keep moist. Celery has a shallow root system so keeping the soil moist is important.

FACTS ABOUT APIUM GRAVEOLENS (Celery)

Celery can be frozen. To do this cut your celery to the desired size, boil some water and blanch for 3 minutes, then dry them off and freeze. This is a great way to have some available at other times of the year, for stews, stir fries & soup.

Traditional medicine has used celery for thousands of years to control blood pressure, for weight loss, arthritis, anxiety, and internal cleansing.

Celery is also an ingredient for spice and perfume.

Germination Instructions

HOW TO GROW APIUM GRAVEOLENS VAR. DULCE (Utah Celery)


Sowing Season by Climate:
Cold                – Mid Spring to Early Summer
Temperate     – Early Spring to Early Summer
Sub-Tropical  – Early Autumn to Mid Spring
Tropical          – Late Summer to Early Spring

Growing Temperatures: 15-25°C / 60-77°F – temperatures below 10°C will cause the plant to bolt to seed.

Start: In seedling tray / punnets 10-12 weeks prior to transplanting.

Soil: Moist, well-draining nutrient and compost rich soil.

Sow: ½ cm (¼ inch)

pH: 6.0-7.5

Water: Keep Moist

Position: Part shade – Afternoon shade is best


Germination Time: 10-14 days in ideal temperatures

Transplant: Can transplant once seedlings reach a height of around 15 cm (6 inches).

Spacing: 20-30 cm’s (1 foot)

Feeding: Organic liquid fertiliser regularly (worm wee, compost tea, sea weed, fish).

Companion plants: Cabbage, tomato, spinach, beans, leek, onion, daisies.

Don’t plant with: Corn, carrots, parsley.

Harvest: 100-120 days. Can be harvested a stalk at a time and can last up to two years harvesting this way or cut the whole celery off from the base.
