Takinogawa Long is an heirloom Japanese variety that is open pollinated and widely cultivated for its long roots. Although the roots are the main attraction, given its detoxification properties, the entire plant can be eaten and have a similar flavour to artichoke.

Arctium lappa is also commonly known as Beggar’s Buttons, Bardane, Great or Thorny Burr, Gobo, Clotbur, Cocklebur and Cockle Buttons.

Growth

Arctium lappa is a fast-growing biennial plant that grows to a maximum height of around 2 metres (7 feet) and spreads no wider than 1m (3 feet). It has large, wavy-edged cordiform leaves that have a long petiole and are pubescent on the underside. Flowers appear during summer and are purple, grouped in globular capitula and united in clusters. The fruits are achenes and are long, compressed and contain small hooks to allow the fur of animals to carry them long distances. They also contain short pappus hairs which are sharp, hazardous to humans and animals.

Burdock plants produce a strong fleshy taproot that can grow up to 1 metre (3 feet) and can be ready to harvest around 90 days after the seed has germinated. This Burdock variety, Takinogawa Long, is fast-growing and can achieve its full height by the end of summer.

HOW TO GROW ARCTIUM LAPPA (Burdock Takinogawa Long)

Step 1

Soak the seeds overnight or for at least 12 hours prior to sowing.

Step 2

Sow the seeds directly onto the surface of the soil and lightly cover. Burdock seeds require light to germinate. The soil needs to be loose and to drain well to allow for the development of the long taproot.

Moisten and leave in a warm, well lit or sunny position.

Ideal temperatures for germination are 20-25°C/68-77°F but keep them in a location that will remain above 10°C/50°F throughout the germination process.

Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.

Step 3

If transplanting from pots, do so once the seedlings have reached 10cm (4 inches) in height. Take care when transplanting as not to damage the primary taproot.

The final position should be in full sun. Dig a hole for each seedling that is at least 50cm (20 inches) deep. This will loosen the soil to allow for the taproot to grow. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Grown in the right season (sprouting by early Spring) Burdock Roots can be ready to harvest in around 120 days.
