This species is a member of more than 250 in the Genus ‘Arisaema’ which are also known as ‘Jack in the Pulpit’ plants. The Whipcord Cobra Lily thrives in a shaded location under the shade of trees or fence that will keep it cool and moist, however the soil should be well draining because it does not like boggy oils and can be prone to rot in these conditions.

Growth

Arisaema tortuosum is a perennial herbaceous plant that can grow as tall as 1.2 metres and 0.8 metres wide. It can have between 1-4 bipinnate leaves around the base off the plant and the large stem develops leaves that open to reveal a green 12-15 cm pitcher shaped flower. The common name comes from the long, whip like tongue that grows around a foot upwards out of the flower mouth, the tongue is a green to purple colour.

The plant will go dormant in the winter and generally doesn’t need watering during this time, you will know this is happening when the leaves yellow and fall. Can be grown in pots.

HOW TO GROW ARISAEMA TORTUOSUM (Whipcord Cobra Lily)

NOTE: Seeds can be cold stratified for 2 -4 weeks and this may improve germination rates, but we normally find that rates are quite good either way.

Step 1
Soak the seeds in cooled boiled water for 48 hours, changing the water every 12 hours to prevent any bacteria build up.

Step 2
Prepare a medium that includes mostly peat and a little propagating (course) sand. Vermiculite and perlite can also be added but not necessary.

Sow the seeds ½ cm deep into a seedling tray or small pots. The seeds can be close together as they are easy to separate later.

Moisten the medium, cover with some plastic kitchen wrap or place inside a mini greenhouse if you have one and leave in a warm, light but shaded position. Keep moist during the entire germination period, seedlings of this species are not drought tolerant.

Some experts suggest using mineral or spring water only as the plants respond poorly to water with added chemicals.

Ideal temperatures to encourage germination are 18-22°C / 65-72°F.

In ideal conditions seeds will begin germinating around 4-8 weeks, however, have been known to take up to 6 months!

Step 3
Once sprouted, remove plastic to allow air circulation and prevent any fungus or mould and continue to keep moist – but not wet as this can kill your seedlings.
Continue to keep in a well-lit but shaded area, the more light the seedling gets at this stage, the bigger and stronger the plant and corms will get before it goes dormant in mid-late autumn to winter.

Step 4
This species can grow entirely in a large pot to give flexibility in growing location.

Transplant in winter to a larger pot when the plant is dormant. Transplant to final position after last frost.

Once established, keep in an area protected from frost for its first winter if possible.

Planting out into their final position in the garden once the corms are around 2 cm’s in size. Again, it is best to do this while they are dormant in winter.

Generally, they are happily planted around 10-15 cm’s deep.

Mulching around the base to combat frosty periods. Additional water is advised when flowering. Fertilise once with a slow release early each growing season or regularly with a weak liquid fertiliser.

Cobra Lilies can take 18-36 months to flower.
