Sweet Wormwood is often confused with True or Common Wormwood as they both have similar features and abilities. But as a medicinal plant Sweet Wormwood is superior while as an insect repellent, the True Wormwood is much better at keeping the bugs away. We also have another Artemisia, the Common Mugwort.

Growth

Sweet Wormwood is a herbaceous annual plant that grows to around 1 metre (3 feet) tall and wide. It is an annual short-day plant which complete its life cycle within eight months. Sweet Wormwood grows an erect stem that is a brownish colour and is hairless. The leaves grow to 5cm (2 inches) in length and are divided by deep cuts into two or three leaflets. Leaves have a strong scent as do the subsequent flowers which can start blooming just six months after sowing seeds.

The small flowers are greenish-yellow and are very fragrant and their arrival signals the alarm for harvest time. Left to develop further, small brown achenes will form to produce the seeds which will begin to wither and fall off at about the ten-month mark.

FACTS ABOUT ARTEMISIA ANNUA (Sweet Wormwood)

Chinese scientist Tu Youyou shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research into Artemisia annua and its ability to fight malaria.

Some studies have found success with Sweet Wormwood for treating osteoarthritis symptoms, especially those affecting the knees and hips. For treatment of inflammation and osteoarthritis, 150 milligrams, twice per day, has been shown to be clinically relevant in pain reductions over the course of 12 weeks.

The plant is usually harvested at the beginning of the flowering period when the artemisinin content is the highest. One hectare can yield up to 3 tonnes of dried leaf.

Sweet Wormwood is the primary plant that Wormwood essential oils are harvested from. Click here to learn more.

Spacing:
Allow 30 cm (1 foots) between seedlings.
Feeding:

Companion plants:

Don’t plant with: Caraway, Anise & Fennel.
Harvest:
Leaves and flowers can be harvested from around 8 months.

Step 1

Surface sow seeds directly onto loosened soil that has good drainage, preferably in rows to assist with weeding. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Seeds require light to germinate.

Moisten this top layer with a spray bottle to avoid disturbing the tiny seeds and move to a warm, well-lit location, preferably away from full sun. Soil must be kept moist (not wet) during entire germination process.

If starting during winter, start in small pots or trays but only about 2-3 weeks earlier than the last frost. Germination and early growth is fast but any exposure to frost will kill the seedlings.

Ideal temperature for germination is 21-24°C/69-75°F.

Seeds should germinate within 7-21 days if kept in ideal conditions.

Step 2

Continue to keep moist, watering only when the top layer of soil dries out, Sweet Wormwood does not like to be too wet and may rot. Keep in a full sun position, in the shade or else they can grow too leggy trying to reach for the sun.

If required, seedlings can be transplanted gently once they have at least 2-4 true leaves. Transplant into the garden once they are strong enough and the threat of any frosts have passed.

Space plants 60 cm (2 feet) apart to give them room to grow and allow for easy access to remove weeds throughout the prime growing period.

Step 3

Sweet Wormwood doesn’t require much water once past the seedling stage but will require additional water over summer periods and once flowering begins.

Sweet Wormwood is a fast-growing annual and start to produce flowers around 8 months after sowing.
