The Giant Thorny Bamboo is a beautiful, bright green variety that has many uses including in the kitchen and for construction, building & craft

Giant Thorny Bamboo ( Bambusa bambos ) is a giant clumping bamboo. The culms grow curved unlike many other bamboo varieties, which grow straight. As a fast-growing species it can be used for screening and is easy to grow in the right conditions. Bambusa bambos can be helpful for land stabilisation and is great to use as a wind break, because of its height and thick, densely clumping nature.

Although this is a tropical bamboo native to India, Bangladesh, and Southeast China, it has also been naturalised in temperate regions.

Other common names for the Bambusa bambos are Spiky Bamboo & Indian Thorny Bamboo.

Thorny Bamboo has a huge range of uses and is farmed & cultivated because of this. The shoots and seeds are edible. The shoots are considered a vegetable, but seeds are only usually eaten as a supplement during famine.

Thorny Bamboo is heavily used in construction. The timber is used to build are bridges, ladders, and rafts as well as roofing and scaffolding. It is also used for basket weaving, to make utensils, bows and arrows and furniture. On top of all these uses, it is an important source of paper pulp.

Bambusa bambos has many medicinal uses.

Growth

This species can grow up to a whopping 20-30 metres high and has bright green foliage. Bamboo can be cut off at a preferred height and will not continue to grow taller once this is done. It will continue to branch and become thicker after cutting though. Adult leaf (blade) length is 7-18 cm, culms can be up to 15 cm in diameter and internode length is 15-45 cm in length. As the common name suggests, Thorny Bamboo does have thorns. The spikes are found on the branch nodes and there are 1-3 thorns on each, so care should be taken when pruning.

Although many Bamboo varieties are quick growing, they can be a little slower while they are still young, in their first couple of years.

HOW TO GROW BAMBUSA BAMBOS (Giant Thorny Bamboo)

Step 1

Place the seeds into a container of warm water and leave to soak for 24 hours.

Step 2

After soaking, prepare a tray or small pots with a mixture and moisten – do not over wet the soil as can rot your seeds, you shouldn’t be able to squeeze water out of the mixture, save some for covering your seeds.

Scatter the seeds on the surface and cover with a thin layer of the medium you have left over (only 1-2mm thick) over the top of the seeds. If you have a humidity dome place this over the top, if not you can cover the tray with either glass, a clear plastic bag or plastic wrap (glad wrap) – this will help maintain moisture and humidity to assist in activating germination.

Step 3

Place tray/pots in a warm, either filtered light or part sun-part afternoon shade location.
Ideal germination temperature is 17-20°C/64-70°F. If you cannot provide these temperatures, you may need a heat mat.

Open lid/plastic every couple of days to check for germination, moisture if necessary and allow some air flow.

You should begin to see germination begin around 3-4 weeks, however if the conditions are not right, germination can take as long as 12 weeks.

Step 4

Approximately a week or so after first germination has begun, the lid/plastic wrap can be removed or when the seedlings reach the top – whichever comes first. seeds may continue to germinate for a few weeks after your first ones have sprouted, so don’t give up immediately on any slow ones.

Seedlings can be safely transplanted around 1 month into 4″ pots and then into bigger pots when roots begin to show on bottom of the pot.

Bamboo grows quite quickly in its ideal temperature of over 20°c but much slower when colder. In colder regions consider keeping in a pot until well established and certainly until Winter is passed. If in a cooler area bamboo will need thick mulching as it will not cope well with frosts.

When transplanting to final position, allow plenty of space for Bamboo to grow. Choose a part sun or sunny location and provide regular water for first few weeks.

Thorny Bamboo takes 12 years to mature.
