FACTS ABOUT PLECTRANTHUS SCUTELLARIOIDES

Plectranthus scutellarioides was first introduced into Europe in 1851 from Indonesia. Throughout the 20th century, commercial scale breeding of Coleus varieties led the plant variety to become the tenth most popular bedding crop in the United States.

The Mazatec people in southern Mexico are said to consume the leaves in order to experience mind-altering effects. Please don’t try this at home.

Some of the countries that Coleus is native to include the northern parts of the Australian states and territories of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. In Asia, they are found wildly growing in the Phillipines, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

HOW TO GROW PLECTRANTHUS SCUTELLARIOIDES (Coleus)

Step 1

Sow the seeds by pressing them into the surface of small pots filled with well-draining soil. A mixture that has a portion of garden sand mixed through is ideal.

Moisten the soil and leave the pots in a bright location but not in direct sunlight.

The ideal temperature for germination is between 15-22°C / 62-72°F. Germination can take between 7-14 days.

Step 2

Coleus seedlings need to be protected from both cold temperatures under 12°C / 55°F and excessive direct sunlight, especially during hot Summers.

In cooler climates, keep them in a container so they can be moved during cold spells. In warmer climates, their final position should be in a shady or semi-shady location that avoids the direct afternoon sun.

Step 3

The final position should be in shade or semi-shade. Finish transplanting by watering in the seedlings.

Even when fully established, plants cannot tolerate temperatures that drop below to 10°C/50°F.

Coleus plants begin to reach a mature age at just 90-100 days.
